September 2025

Issue 67

A very warm welcome back to all our children and families for the new school year at Poverest, and welcome to all our new families, whether in Reception or other year groups. In many ways, the new term signals the end of the summer, but the rain has also confirmed that the holidays are over. I hope you didn't get too wet this week on your journeys to and from school.

We have all been very impressed with our new reception classes and how they have started their Poverest Journey, the first challenge for us - mainly me - is to learn all of their names!

The school is looking fabulous and I wish to publicly thank all of the staff for their incredible work transforming their classrooms ready for their new children. The children have also been amazing, they have settled calmly into their new surroundings and have confidently spoken to me about their learning and new topics they have been studying this week.

Unfortunately, some roofing works organised by the local authority did not occur over the summer and this is now scheduled to start on the 22nd September. The site area will be contained and away from children, but the main playground will be slightly affected. Drop-off will be via the two large grey gates, as it is for pick-up for Key Stage 2 children.

Our school clubs start next week, children in school clubs attain higher academically, than those who are not members of a club. The sense of belonging and being part of a group or team improves children's attitudes towards the school and learning. Please do try to sign up to at least one school club and if finances are a barrier, please speak to us. The termly voluntary contribution for teacher-led clubs is available on Arbor. The £10 donation is used to provide resources and equipment for the clubs that the school staff lead. Times are hard financially for families and schools, so although there is no obligation to donate - please do if you are able to, as it helps us as a school provide fun opportunities for all.

Next week, we look forward to all the children having their Reading Adventure Day on either Thursday or Friday. Reading is the secret to school success and inspiring children to read is something we must all do in our increasingly digital world.

Have a wonderful weekend and we all wish Mrs Mills the best of luck in her Half-Marathon on Sunday!

Focus Week – Reception

What a wonderful first week we’ve had in Reception! We are so proud of how quickly the children have settled into their new school routines and how confidently they have approached this exciting new chapter in their lives. Starting school is such a big step, and it has been lovely to see their smiles and enthusiasm.

The children have been eager to explore their classrooms and the garden area, meet new friends, and take part in a variety of activities this week. They have quickly begun to follow our daily routines, such as coming in each morning, hanging up their belongings on their pegs, and joining the group on the carpet. Their confidence has grown every day as they’ve become more familiar with the structure of the school day.

One of the highlights of the week has been seeing the children get to know each other and make new friends. They have had fun playing together and learning to share resources, and have been fantastic at taking turns, even forming a line for the climbing frame independently and patiently waiting for their turn! Whether building in the construction area, creating imaginative games in the home corner, or simply chatting over lunch, the children are forming very special bonds.

Lunch times have also been a big success. Many children were excited to try school dinners for the first time, and they managed brilliantly in the canteen, carrying their trays, sitting with friends and trying new foods. Eating together has been a lovely way for them to socialise and develop independence, and we have been impressed with how well they have managed this new part of their day

In class, the children have been busy with activities designed to help us get to know them. They have been writing their names and drawing self-portraits, which are now proudly on display in the classroom. We have also spent time enjoying a range of stories together. The children have listened carefully, joined in with repeated phrases, and shared their thoughts about the characters and events. Story time has already become a calm and special part of our day, and it is lovely to see how engaged they are.

The children were also fantastic in their first Music and PE lessons this week! They enjoyed making different sounds using their voices in Music, and playing “Simon Says” in PE.

We are incredibly proud of each child and the way they have embraced their first week at school. We look forward to many more weeks of fun, learning, and discovery together.
