Issue 59

A huge well done to every child in year 6 this week. The SATs are their first formal sit down examinations and they all approached the week calmly and confidently. Exams or tests are a major part of secondary education and this experience will help them in future tests. A big thank you as well to the staff involved ensuring that the week went smoothly and the children were supported well.

EYFS visited the River Cray this week as part of our links with the South East Rivers Trust. The children learned about living things as part of their curriculum.

I met with the Parent Forum this week to answer questions from the Parent Community. The minutes of the meeting as on the school website. The school street closure was discussed and it was clear the vast majority of parents still support the school street closure.

The Friends of Poverest held their AGM at the school on Thursday. Thank you once again to everyone who helped support the group to raise vital funds for the school and good luck to all those volunteering their time over the coming year. We hope to have our Outdoor Classroom fully installed during the next year.

Next week is the last week of term, which has come around quickly. As it is a half term break pick up is at the normal times. We also have the book fair in school again. We do appreciate finances are difficult but if you are able to support the book fair we do appreciate it. Not only does it inspire children to read something new, the school receives a share of every purchase, which we then use to keep our school library updated with the latest texts.

Focus Week - Year 3

In English we have been  learning about the text “The Mysteries of Harris Burdick”. Our grammar skills have been creating descriptive, atmospheric settings, using dialogue and adding noun phrases with prepositions. We have written our own mystery story, using an image from the text.Currently we are designing our own superhero comic strip for a competition, this is an exciting process choosing a character and deciding on a setting.

In Maths, we have been learning about measuring in grams and kilograms applying the same knowledge in litres and millilitres. This week we are starting shape and soon we will be moving onto angles. This is always a favourite topic as we will be able to relate this to our Art and Design project on sculpture.

In Art and Design we are collecting cardboard boxes ready for a sculpture extravaganza. Visiting the Tate Modern last week was a firm favourite with us all. It will support us with our future designs in our project.

‘Plant Reproduction’ has been a hot topic in Science for this half term. We have been carrying out different investigations on how light, water, and air affect the growth of a plant.

We have been learning about how and why the Romans invaded Britain in History. So far we have found out what skills the Romans brought with them. It was interesting to find out about the Roman army, and their formation and battling tactics.

Spanish has  been interesting as we have been learning about ‘Where do you live in Spain?’ We have been practising the names of places using key phonemes. Also we have had the opportunity of using a bilingual dictionary.

They had a wonderful time seeing lots of different animals such as Rhinos, Tigers and Lions! Remember all children who have less than 3 days off school in the summer term will be entered into the draw for the next set of BuyaGift vouchers!
