Issue 40

It has certainly got colder this week and despite it being lovely and warm inside the school building we do make use of fresh air and the outside environment throughout the whole year, so please ensure a waterproof coat and jumper are in school every day. On the topic of school uniform, our prices are increasing after half-term but you can buy uniform items at the current prices next week. Please also ensure long hair is tied up whilst at school. A couple of year groups have had headlice outbreaks this week and the tieing up of hair reduces the spread. Headlice do love long, clean hair, unfortunately.

As part of our Black History Month celebrations, we had two assemblies from local police officers who read the children short stories of influential black people as well as answering questions from the children. They were very inspiring police officers and a few children are keen to be police officers when they are older.

Congratulations to the football teams this week, the boys narrowly losing to St James and the girls' team had a fantastic 7-0 win away from home in their first league match.

Year 3 had a great time at the Science Museum on Friday learning all about forces and magnets as part of their science learning this half term.

Mrs Wilson, Mrs Marshall and I met with the local authority on attendance this week, although our attendance has improved hugely over the last year the amount of holidays being taken in term time is very high. Holidays should not be taken in term time as statistics do show that missed schooling due to any absence does harm children's academic performance. Please book your time away in the school holidays and if you can take advantage of the two weeks in October as prices are often more affordable in at least one of those weeks.

Next week we have our parents' evenings, which will be a formal chance to see how your child is doing in their new class and share the next key learning steps they require. Securing knowledge and skills requires repetition so any reinforcement of this key learning at home will only help your child academically in school. The book fair will also be here during the parents' evenings. Any sales do give the school a percentage so do support it if you are able to do so. On Friday we have a very busy day with the Granparent's Tea Parties, the Friends of Poverest still need help for both the morning and afternoon sessions. If you can help with either one please let the main office know or email hello@friendsofpoverest.co.uk. The advantage is that you get to see the performance as well!

Have a great weekend.

Focus Week - Year 5

What a busy half term we have had with settling in, swimming and even more fun subjects. We have been incredibly proud of the attitude in which the children have returned to Year 5 with. They are completing their school work to a high standard, reading more than they were (which is showing in their quizzes) and their maths skills are improving.

Swimming: We have now finished our 5 weeks of swimming and each child has made great progress and loved the experience from walking there, catching a bus and of course paddling in the water.

English: We have covered 'The day the crayons came home' where the children learned how to pose questions for an interview as they were the crayon who had to be interviewed.

We are now focussing on a book called ' The Lizzie and Belle mysteries' and has all of us on edge to find out what happened to Sancho Ignatius. We have learned to write a persuasive advert, so far, to attend a show in London. A great deal more work ahead of us with future tasks.

Maths:Year 5 work with bigger numbers (up to 1 million) in place value. We have partitioned numbers, added and subtracted using exchanging. Word problems have been solved and challenges have been set. Soon, we will be looking at fractions as well as multiplying and dividing numbers.

Science: We have had great experiments this term  looking at properties of change, insulation as well as reversible and irreversible materials. We have 'exploded' some materials (Coke and Mentos, bicarb and vinegar) with great shrieks and learning had by the children.

History: All about the Tudors and Henry VIII with his wives. We have learned about the family timeline and Queen Elizabeth's visit to Worcester and what changes were done to accommodate her. We will also be looking at the crime and punishment  from the Tudor times, I am sure the children will find this more interesting.
