June 2024

Issue 33

This is always a favourite week of mine on the school calendar. The Sports Days were a huge success once again and the joy of seeing so many children with beaming smiles at taking part is so wonderful to see. Days like this do not happen by chance and the superb organisation from Mr Duffin, Miss Johnson and Mr McManus is hugely appreciated by myself and the staff team. They even managed to choose the perfect weather for a Sports Day! It is also lovely to see so many children proudly wearing their Poverest coloured house top, we believe these are great value for money as the children can wear them on two school days a week. Wearing the top also makes the children feel proud and part of the team. As and when tops become too small please consider donating them to other families and you can also donate them to the Friends of Poverest who will add them to their pre-loved uniform sale stall.

The sporting events continued this week with Poverest hosting a Y4 Lacrosse competition on Thursday against other local schools and a Baseball event against Edgebury on Friday. We really do have a fantastic PE offering at Poverest as we continue to positively encourage all our children to live active healthy lifestyles.

This week we were visited by the local authority to be moderated for the end of key stage 2 writing. Our year 6 teachers are required to prove that children meet the expected standard in writing. I am pleased to say that the moderators agreed with all our judgements and that we know exactly what the children need to do in their writing to ensure they are secondary school-ready.

I was entertained in my office on Thursday with the reception children enjoying a Traditional Fairy Tales performance in the main hall. Philip from the Traditional Tales Theatre Show certainly brought the fairy tales to life in a very humourous manner and I'm sure it inspired our youngest children to have a go at their own storytelling in the next few weeks.

This week we say goodbye to Mrs King. Mrs King joined us in January to help cover a variety of classes and has been a valued member of the Poverest Team. I'm delighted that she now has her own headship again at another local school and wish her every success in the future.

During assembly on Friday, I launched our new attendance competition for the next 4 weeks. This follows a knock-out style competition to see which class will have an ice cream celebration in the final week of the year. We have seen a huge improvement in our attendance and I thank you all for the support in this area and encourage you all to keep the good attendance for the remaining few weeks.

Next week we have the London Rocks TT-Rockstars competition so I encourage all children to have a big week learning their tables on the game. It would be wonderful to be one of the top schools once again! Year 2 are off to Frylands for their overnight stay. It is a fantastic site and the children will have a brilliant experience.

Finally, a huge best of luck to the children selected for the Lacrosse final, to get to the National Final again is a huge achievement. Unfortunately, not every Lacrosse player can be part of the final team but everyone who has played should be proud of representing our school.

Have a great weekend,

Mr Haylock

Focus week-Year 3

It has been a busy week in Year 3, with Sports Day on Tuesday.

In English, We have been studying the text ‘The Legend of Sally Jones’ which is a graphic novel about a gorilla. We have written a front page newspaper report, created dialogue between characters, used conjunctions to create multi-clause sentences and are now writing a leaflet explaining how to survive in a jungle.

Our focus in Maths has been learning about telling the time. Children have been doing practical sessions on telling the time and setting up time challenges for their peers. We are now moving on to statistics where we will be looking at representing data through pictograms and barcharts. Then, we will move to fractions and consolidate our understanding of addition and subtraction.

In Science, we have been studying the topic Making Connections: Does hand span affect grip strength? The connections are recalling key knowledge from the topics we have learnt during year 3. In this topic we are exploring the relationship between hand span and grip strength through scientific enquiry.

For our Design and Technology, our topic is ‘Cooking and Nutrition: Eating seasonally’. We are learning about seasonal foods and then we will be making a crumble using seasonal fruit in England.

In Spanish, we are learning the correct pronunciation of some cities in Spain and notice  key phoneme b/v.We will also learn how to ask  questions and select an appropriate phrase to answer them.Furthermore, we will develop our understanding on locating and reading information and create a short  paragraph using phrases adapted from a model.

Our Geography topic this half term is- Are all settlements the same? Throughout this unit we will be learning to locate some cities in the UK, describing the difference between villages, towns and cities. We will also learn to identify features on an OS map and follow a route on an OS map. In addition, we will  develop our understanding of reasons for choosing the location to live and locate some geographical regions in the UK.

The FoP are still in need of volunteers for our Summer Fair. Even if you could spare an hour to help on one of our stalls, it would be very much appreciated. If you can help, please email volunteers@friendsofpoverest.co.uk
