Issue 26

It has been another busy and exciting week here at Poverest, with a lot of fantastic things happening for the children.

Firstly, a thank you to all those who supported the Friends of Poverest's St George's Own Clothes Day. Your donations are greatly appreciated, and I encourage anyone interested in volunteering with the Friends of Poverest to reach out to me via Class Dojo. Your help will make a significant difference in the wonderful work they do for our school community.

This week, we had our termly full governor's meeting, where we had the opportunity to celebrate the many achievements and successes happening within our school. It is also a valuable time for Governors to challenge and question our decision-making processes, ensuring that everything we do is ultimately in the best interest of our children.

Year 3 had fantastic school trips to the British Museum in London, further enriching their learning about the Roman Empire. A special thank you to Miss. Irwin and Mrs. Thakur for organising a great experience for our children.

On the sporting front, our teams have been performing admirably once again. A big congratulations to the football team for their outstanding 3-0 victory and 1-1 draw against two formidable opponents. Additionally, well done to all the children who participated in the Tri-Golf event. Remember, there are still plenty of sporting clubs available for sign-up, especially those offered by Sportacus. Summer is a great time to explore new activities and interests.

Mrs Hopper entered a group of gifted mathematicians in the Junior Maths Challenge this week. It is a national competition consisting of some very high-level mathematical problems. Mrs Hopper was so impressed with how well the group did so a huge well done to them all.

Have a great weekend and thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child's education.

Focus week - Year 3

It has been a busy week in Year 3, celebrating St.George’s Day and our trip to The British Museum to view the exhibition a day in the life of a Roman legion.

In English, we have been looking at a beautiful text called ‘The Tear Thief’. After exploring the idea that emotions could be matched with jewels, we created a shared-poem, discussing different verb forms used in the text and then we wrote a letter in role using the present perfect form. We have just received a letter from The Tear Thief asking for help by writing a persuasive letter to Year 2, explaining why different tears are more precious than others.

Our focus in Maths has been measurement. Under this topic we have learned to convert money from pence to pounds, adding and subtracting it along with finding change. We are continuing to develop our understanding of mass and capacity and are very proud of completing the maths challenges.

In Science, we have been studying the topic ‘Plant Reproduction.’ We have set up two investigations so far, where we are observing what happens to plants when they do not get enough air or water. With us also having the amazing opportunity of Forest School this half term with Mr. Duffin-we made our own pots out of newspapers, planted a sunflower seed and have taken them home. Therefore, we can watch our sunflowers grow and learn about plants too!

For our Art and Design topic we are learning about ‘Sculpture, 3D and Abstract Shapes.’ Our first lesson was trying out different ways to make 3D card shapes by folding and curving the card or joining flat shapes together. We then made a structure that holds its 3D shape, with an added challenge of not having any glue or tape to secure the sculpture! Great fun was had by all.

We have been so excited about learning classroom objects in Spanish. So far we have learnt to recognise and respond to spoken classroom instructions. Moving forward we are learning to identify how a noun phrase changes in the plural form when describing classroom items which will lead to composing a piece of writing describing what is in a school bag.

Our History topic this half term is why did Romans settle in Britain? In this topic we are learning about the Romans invasion of Britain, Boudicca’s rebellion, Roman army, their battle formations etc. This topic will develop children’s understanding on the impact Romans made in building and shaping modern Britain.

In RE we are looking at the importance of water in various religions, building our understanding of why water is important and symbolic. We will be discussing and explaining the importance of water creation stories and  showing our understanding of different ways water is essential for life.

Gym Equipment and Trim Trail

Unfortunately we are not insured to use the play equipment after school hours or when it is not being supervised by our staff. This means that we cannot allow you to use the Blue gym equipment and trim trail on the playground during pick-up times for the Key Stage 2 children.

It was lovely to see the children dressed up for St Georges Day on Tuesday. We raised £414 for our school!
