Issue 18

It has been nice to see the sunshine this week after all the cold weather we have had recently. This week some of the designated safeguard leads have been on refresher courses and it is a good opportunity to remind you all that if you have any safeguarding concerns you can report them to myself, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Mills, Mrs Boorman and Mrs Arnold when she returns from maternity leave. We have also held learning conferences this week. This is where the SLT check the learning in the books of the children and also speaks to them about how they are finding school. This monitoring ensures that our curriculum is being taught correctly and every child is given just the right amount of challenge so they can progress with their learning.

Some of our very clever year 5 mathematicians attended a maths challenge morning at Bromley High. They clearly did very well as Mrs O'Connor reported that they were answering so many questions correctly they were asked to let the other schools have a go! All the children had a great time and they were full of enthusiasm on the way home in the mini-bus!

My assembly this week was around driverless vehicles and their ever nearing presence on our roads. We discussed the British Value of the Rule of Law and how that will need to change in order to allow these vehicles on our roads.

Myself and Mrs Wilson attended the AFACT leadership day on Friday with other school leaders from Edgebury and Southborough Primary schools. These are very useful days where we learn from each other about the successes of each school and we have plenty of ideas to take away to help develop our own schools further so that the whole school community continues to thrive.

Many thanks,
Mr  Haylock (Head Teacher)

Focus week - Year 1

Year 1 have been reading a lovely book called "The Comet".

New objects appeared in our classroom which were linked to our new story.

We used talking hands to think of questions about the objects like:

Who enjoys cooking food?

What is the cat’s name?

Where do they live?

Is the man the girl’s dad?

Are they happy?

Is the cat their pet?

The story is about a little girl and her dad who have to move house. The children wrote her a letter to let her know that she could make her new house a home. The children were also asked as homework to look up in the sky at night to see the stars.

In History we have been learning about toys from the past and making comparisons. I think the children were quite surprised when the adults told them that we didn't have an IPad or Nintendo when we were growing up.

In science we have been looking at what our senses do and carried out an experiment where the children had to guess an object by only using their sense of touch.
