Issue 13

This week the children have had their first set of assessments. At Poverest we formally assess the children three times a year to get a firm understanding on what they remember. We use the data from the assessments to help plan what to teach next and also to plan the interventions children may need in the Spring term to revisit learning that the children have not remembered from the Spring terms. Children are expected to learn more and remember more in this national curriculum and this is crucial so that the new learning is built upon firm foundations of knowledge. The expectations are very high and much higher than we, as parents, had when we were at school.

This week we held a restorative justice parent workshop which the parents found very useful for managing a positive behaviour environment at home, which mirrors techniques we use in school. They are excellent sessions so I would encourage you to attend if you can. We will make the next one at a different time period during the day to avoid clashes with your daily jobs. We also had our Full Governors Meeting during the week and I was delighted to share the fantastic events we have held in school this year but also with how well the children have been progressing with their learning under the excellent guidance of the teachers and teaching assistants.

The football teams had excellent performances against Farnborough this week and Mrs Inwood organised a fantastic day of 'Rock Band Music' on Friday with Ros from RockSteady. They hope to run a club in school so providing we get enough numbers that will run in the Spring Term.

Attendance at school is really really important, I appreciate illness is around but as soon as any temperature or sickness has stopped we would like the children back in school learning. Poor attendance does have a negative impact on your child's education and we can all work together to improve this and ultimately ensure that your children are learning every day and improving all the time.

Finally, we have our celebration of learning next week. This starts at 2pm, however, this doesn't mean you need to be here at 2pm. You can arrive at any time after 2pm but before the end of the end of the school day. Then you can visit your child's classroom, see their books and talk to the adults. You can then take your child home after celebrating their excellent efforts during the Autumn term.

Have a wonderful weekend and wrap up warm!

Focus week - Year 3

Year 3 have been very busy with two trips and lots of fabulous  learning!

In English, we have been looking at a variety of texts. ‘Jim a Cautionary Tale’ was a good read. After finishing the book we did some performance poetry and wrote warning posters. We have just finished ‘Escape from Pompeii’, which is a non-fiction text about the fall of Pompeii. This is a cross-curricular link with our Geography topic ‘Why do people live near volcanoes?’ Our main writing focus was a newspaper report. We included direct quotes from survivors who we

hot-seated (this is a drama technique) and have continued to practice writing setting descriptions.

In Maths, we started learning adding and subtracting across a 10 and a 100 without making any exchanges. After securing our understanding, we moved to adding and subtracting with making exchanges. Now, we have progressed on to multiplication and are working very hard in learning and using our times table knowledge to work out the calculations.

In Science, we have been studying the topic ‘Forces and Magnets’’. Through practical investigations we have been identifying examples of magnetic and non-magnetic materials with magnets. Using mini cars and ramps we have observed how the cars move differently on a variety of surfaces. Our trip to the Science Museum was a great day out-where we learnt about friction and forces in a show and explored the Wonder Lab.

In Design and Technology, our topic is ‘Constructing a Castle’ so we have been making different 3D nets and have learnt about the different elements of a castle. At the end of term we will have the opportunity to design and make our own castle out of recycled materials.

Coding has been our focus in Computing using the platform ‘Scratch’. We have learnt how to use loops, made an animation and had a go at programming a game.

Wellbeing and Health has been our focus in PSHE and we had a great week of learning during Anti-Bullying week.

In Spanish, we are learning to understand and ask some questions. We are also developing skills to give appropriate answers to those questions and adapt a given phrase about self.

In Geography, we explored the layers of the Earth and built our knowledge about the tectonic plates. We also studied various ways the mountains and volcanoes  can be formed. It was exciting during our lessons to hold discussions about the positive and negative effects of living near a volcano.

In RE, we have been learning about where morals come from. We discussed various ways that people decide between right and wrong. We also identified the similarities and differences between religious guidance from some religions.

School Football Team

Splashing in the wet rain, we travelled to Farnborough school to go to a football match. When we got there, it was still pouring! At the start, we got into our positions - ready to battle! In the first half, I played centre midfield. After scoring three goals, all of us knew we were winning. I scored two of the goals and Phoebe scored one. The second half started well and the other team did not score any goals. I played striker. The mud squelched under our feet with the thought of winning in our minds. We finished with victory - winning 3-0!

Isla

On Tuesday, the boy's football team played at our school ground, competing against Farnborough Primary School.

The players who played from Poverest were: Me, Kamali, Logan, Zaide, Freddie, Oliver, Tommy, Edward, Jake and Louis.

It was a very tough match because the ground was very muddy and wet. Oliver scored our goal to make it 1-1 and despite playing really well we couldn’t find the winning goal.

Drama Club

The children in our drama club had an amazing trip to the Polka Theatre this week to see The Snow Queen. They fully immersed themselves in the story, sang away and really enjoyed joining in to help one of the main characters escape the clutches of the icy world he’d become trapped in. Hopefully, they will all be inspired to try something similar in their own drama.

A huge thank you to Mrs Sovic Davies and Miss Williams for helping out. We were very proud of how well behaved all the children were on the way there and back.

RockSteady

Poverest has been rocking out today due to the arrival of Rocksteady! Rosario came and introduced the children to all the instruments needed to make the perfect pop/rock band including; the electric guitar, base guitar, keyboard, drums and voice. His demonstrations and workshops got the children playing, singing and truly rocking out! If you would like to find out more information about how your child can join in with a Rocksteady band and learn to play, please see the letter your child is bringing home today.

Safeguarding News

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) ensures that we keep personal data safe and only use it when we need to. Many of you will be aware of it in your own lines of work. However, it still does apply in our personal lives as well and an example of that is the information you have on WhatsApp groups. We've had reports of some parents sharing the phone numbers of other parents. This is often for reputable reasons such as birthday parties but it is always a good idea to ask that person first before you do.
