Focus Week - Year 2

What a fantastic start to Year 2 we have had!

The children have been incredibly busy over the past few weeks and have settled beautifully into their new routines. We have spent time talking about our routines in Year 2, getting to know each other and finding out all about the exciting things we will be learning this year.

In English, we have been reading ‘Vlad and the Great Fire of London’. We have had lots of fun exploring what it would have been like to be in London during the Great Fire through role play. We also used Now Press Play to bring our learning to life and experienced what it may have been like at the time. The children used some fantastic vocabulary and their senses to describe what they could see, hear, smell and feel. We then used this vocabulary to write character descriptions. We have also been learning how to write clear instructions and wrote our own instructions explaining how to put out a fire.

In Maths, we have been learning all about place value and looking closely at two-digit numbers. We have been partitioning numbers into tens and ones and exploring different ways that numbers can be partitioned. We used Dienes to help us develop our understanding and make our learning practical. We have also been practising counting in 10s, completing missing numbers on number lines and making sure that we form our numbers correctly.

In Science, we have been investigating what makes something alive, something that was once alive or something that has never been alive. We went on a hunt around our school to find things that matched each description, which was lots of fun! We have also started exploring different habitats and learning about the animals that live in them. We were also very lucky to take part in a wonderful drama workshop, where we explored the theme of our planet. The children thoroughly enjoyed using drama to think about our world and how we can look after it. What a busy few weeks we have had so far! We are so proud of how well the children have settled into Year 2 and of the enthusiasm they have shown towards their learning. We are looking forward to all the exciting learning and adventures still to come!
