Issue 42

What a brilliant week we've had at Poverest, and what a wonderful way to end this half term. Our Year 1 pupils have been fantastic ambassadors for our local community this week. They've been out and about doing a litter pick around the edge of our school site, and making a real difference to the spaces around us. It's exactly the kind of initiative that helps our young people understand the importance of looking after their environment and being active members of their community.

Meanwhile, Year 6 have been developing some crucial life skills. They spent an afternoon at Orpington Fire Station learning about fire safety and emergency procedures. These experiences are invaluable – they give our pupils real-world knowledge that could genuinely make a difference in their lives. A huge thank you to the team at the fire station for welcoming our children and sharing their expertise.

Behind the scenes, the Friends of Poverest have been working hard too. Their AGM this week celebrated a successful year, which delivered our Outdoor Classroom, and there are some genuinely exciting plans in the pipeline for the year ahead. The support that the Friends of Poverest provide to our school is remarkable, and we thank them all for the time they give to supporting our school.

Now, to the celebrations. Our cricket teams have absolutely excelled this week. The School Dynamo Cricket team delivered an impressive performance against Tubbenden, securing a 40-run victory in their league match. But that's not all – our girls' cricket team has been on fire, winning all five of their matches at the girls-only cricket day. It's been wonderful to see such skill, teamwork, and determination on display.

We also want to give a special mention to our Orchard Bowling Team, who represented Bromley brilliantly at the London Finals in Romford this week. Competing at that level is a real achievement, and we're incredibly proud of their efforts.

The week culminated in something truly special on Friday afternoon with the final of Poverest Has Got Talent. It was a celebration of the incredible range of talents we have across our school community. Moments like these remind us of just how special our pupils are.

As we head into half-term, I'd encourage you all to have a wonderful, well-deserved break. And of course, good luck to Palace in the UEFA Conference Final on Wednesday!

School returns at the usual times on Monday 1st June. We look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for the final push towards the end of term.

Focus Week - Year 3

Year 3 had an amazing day out at the British Museum, learning about what was important to the ancient Egyptians. The children were fascinated by the Rosetta stone and understood its significance in reading hieroglyphics. They also discovered the process of mummification and the Egyptians' beliefs about the afterlife.

In English, we have been learning about the texts Cinderella of the Nile and The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Gold Fish, focusing on different elements of grammar, such as using verbs and adjectives, as well as developing their dialogue writing skills and use of conjunctions. The children also had the opportunity to draw and write their own shape poems based on Dirty Beasts by Roald Dahl.
The reading cafe was a fabulous success. The children and the adults had a great time reading in the library area.

In Maths, we have been learning about Fractions. Also, we have been learning about measuring in grams and kilograms, applying the same knowledge in litres and millilitres. This week, we are starting angles, and soon we will be moving on to shape. It is always a favourite maths topic as we will be able to relate this to our Art and Design project on sculpture. Plant Reproduction has been a hot topic in Science for this half term. We have been carrying out different investigations on how light, water, and air affect the growth of a plant.

Art and Design has been about 3D sculpture and abstract shape this half term. The children have been transforming 2D card shapes into 3D structures and sculptures. They have been exploring abstract shapes and space, as well as developing their skills in constructing 3D objects and understanding the difference between 2D and 3D art. This is linked to our whole school art project called Small Stories. We have made sculptured playgrounds and then wrote art reviews about our playgrounds.

Spanish focus has been on classroom objects. The children have been learning to name classroom objects and exploring grammar rules such as masculine and feminine nouns, forming plurals and creating negative sentences. They have certainly enjoyed this topic.

Good Afternoon,

Jessica Smith in year 3, Birch class, is taking part in a 10km charity walk for Breakthrough T1D.

She is walking with ‘Team Chloe’ to support her big sister, Chloe Smith who was a former pupil of Poverest too and has type 1 diabetes.

Alan popped into the office this morning and you kindly agreed to share the donation link on this weeks newsletter.

I’ve attached this below along with a photo of what the girls previous primary school put in their newsletter if that would help with information to share?

Thank you very much,

Louise
