It has been another busy and exciting week at Poverest Primary School!

First and foremost, I want to extend a huge well done to all of our Year 6 children for their exceptional focus and dedication during their SATs this week. The calm, composed approach they've shown has been truly impressive. Of course, this wouldn't have been possible without the brilliant support from our staff, who have worked tirelessly to keep them all feeling confident and reassured. We are very proud of you all – both the children and the team who've supported them.

Beyond the classroom, we've had a fantastic week of enrichment activities and trips across the school. Willow class ventured out to the farm, where the children had a wonderful time seeing all the animals up close. Year 3 enjoyed a brilliant day at the British Museum, where the Egyptian exhibits proved to be a particular highlight – I'm sure there were some very excited young historians! And to cap off their SATs week, our Year 6 pupils were treated to a well-deserved trip to the Science Museum on Friday. These experiences are so valuable in bringing learning to life and creating lasting memories.

I'd also like to thank Mrs Jewitt for stepping in to lead our Parent Forum meeting on Thursday this week, as I was unavailable. These meetings play such an important role in helping parents understand how schools operate and the thinking behind the decisions we make. If you haven't already, do have a look at the minutes on our website – they're really informative. Alongside this, we've also held our resources governors meeting this week, where we've been reviewing the school budget for the coming financial year. It's important work that ensures we're making the most of our resources to support every child's learning.

Looking ahead, tonight we have our Year 4 sleepover at school – a huge thank you to all the staff who've organised an evening packed with fun events for the year group. I'm sure it will be a memorable night, and hopefully everyone manages to get some sleep!

As we approach the final week before May Half-Term, I wanted to remind you that pick-up times will remain as usual.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend.

Focus Week - Year 2

The children had a fantastic start to the week, with many of them proudly bringing in medals and certificates from their achievements over the weekend. It was wonderful to celebrate their successes and hear all about their football matches, gymnastics competitions, swimming lessons, and other clubs they attend outside of school. We love seeing the children’s talents and interests shine both in and out of the classroom!

English

In English, we have been creating our very own Dragonology books. The children have absolutely loved using their imaginations to write about different types of dragons, including what they eat, where they live, and even how to train them!

The children worked hard to make their writing exciting by using conjunctions, expanded noun phrases, and prepositions. We were so impressed with their creativity and descriptive language, and they should all feel very proud of the fantastic stories and information pages they produced.

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning all about telling the time. We discussed how many adults now use digital clocks, but it is still very important to understand how to read an analogue clock too.

The children practised telling the time to the hour, half past, quarter past, and quarter to using mini clocks and interactive activities. We also began looking at time in 5-minute intervals and practised counting around the clock in fives to help us read different times confidently. The children worked hard to understand where the minute hand points for each time and enjoyed challenging themselves with time problems and matching activities.

History

In History, we have been learning about different types of castles and their features. We explored why castles were built and how they were used in the past. The children then designed their own castles, thinking carefully about features such as moats, towers, drawbridges, and battlements. We loved seeing all of their creative ideas!

Science

In Science, we have started our new topic on health, exercise, and keeping clean. To help the children understand how germs spread, the teachers carried out a fun experiment using glitter to represent germs from a sneeze. The children were amazed to see how quickly the “germs” spread from person to person and around the classroom! We discussed the importance of washing our hands properly, covering our mouths when we cough or sneeze, and keeping our bodies healthy through exercise and good hygiene.

Art

In Art, we designed our own clay houses using a range of techniques we have learnt so far, including imprinting and shaping. The children carefully planned their designs and thought about the textures and patterns they wanted to include. We are very excited to begin making our clay houses next week and cannot wait to bring our wonderful creations home to show you!

Thank you for your continued support. We are so proud of all the hard work and enthusiasm the children have shown this week!

We have had a fantastic week in Year 2!
