Issue

It has felt lovely and summery in school when the sun has shone this week. It is lovely at this time of year when children are learning both inside and outside the classroom. The children have enjoyed seeing the chicks grow this week and some children have held them as well. We wish the chicks the happiest of lives as they go back to the farm to live.

Year 5 embarked on an amazing virtual reality trip to learn about the Vikings. It was wonderful to see history come alive as they navigated longships and explored ancient settlements.

Last Sunday I enjoyed watching the London Marathon and I spoke again about it, linking to charities in our picture news assembly on Thursday. The assembly also introduced a fascinating conversation about Artificial Intelligence, specifically focusing on the invention of AI glasses designed to help people living with dementia. This sparked discussions about how technology can be used to improve lives, whilst also being aware that AI can be used for good or bad. Many people ran the marathon in support of dementia charities, which pay for innovations like the AI glasses. The highlights for us, of course, were cheering on Mr Duffin, who finished the marathon in an amazing 3 hours 23 minutes and seeing all of those children running the mini-marathon on Saturday morning. A huge well done to them all.

A group of our brightest young mathematicians embraced the challenge of the Junior Maths Challenge. These challenges push our students to apply logic and complex problem-solving in fun and engaging ways, and we are eagerly awaiting their results.

Please remember that voting for our Governor parent representatives is concluding next week, so please place your vote in the box in the main entrance.

We are delighted that we are full once again for our new reception classes in September. We look forward to welcoming our newest pupils and their families into our community, as well as all of our current parents who will now be bringing their younger children to our school.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of Poverest and I wish you all a lovely long bank holiday weekend.
Many thanks,
Mr Haylock

Focus Week – Reception

Reception have had a fantastic first few weeks back after our Easter break and are all looking so grown up now in their final term in Early Years!

Our topic for this half term is Growing, which kicked off with a bang with the arrival of our chick eggs! We have loved watching them grow from eggs to the cutest fluffy chicks. We have all been incredibly excited to have them in our classrooms, and they have been a great source of inspiration for our writing. We have written guides all about how to look after the chicks, thought about what our most cheeky chicks may say to one another and have explored the life cycle of chicks, finding out that when a chick is newly hatched it is called a hatchling and that our chicks will grow into roosters or hens when they grow up! Our favourite part of seeing the chicks has been being able to give them a cuddle! We were all very sensible and gentle with our little feathered friends who we are sad to see leave us this Friday. Whilst we say goodbye to our chick friends, we are incredibly excited to make some more animal friends on our upcoming trip to Romshed farm where we hope to see some newborn lambs!

We have been incredibly smart in our Maths sessions, learning all about odd and even numbers. We loved making our own Numberblocks and exploring how odd Numberblocks always have a spare at the top, whilst even Numberblocks will always be in pairs. We were very quick to sort our Numberblocks into odd and even teams! We are continuing to explore our doubles to 10 and are getting so good at it, we are beginning to be able to double our numbers without working out the answer on our fingers! We can’t wait to see what new maths skill we will be learning next!

We have also had a great time exploring our personal History through looking at how we change from babies to children. We loved playing our ‘Guess the Baby’ game where we even saw baby pictures of our teachers! We loved exploring how we all changed but also looking at how we could look for clues in the photos to figure out which baby was each of our friends.

We were lucky the sun has been shining more now as it meant we could go on a Scientific exploration in Forest School and hunt for Minibeasts! We loved walking around the woodland area spotting butterflies and bees and trying to find ants and woodlice under our basecamp logs.

We are loving how sunny and warm it is getting now which has meant more time spent outside, playing in our new and improved water and sand areas and making lots of fun obstacle courses in the outdoor classroom.

We can’t wait to see what new adventures we will have this Summer!
