Issue 42

I hope everyone had a lovely Easter Break and that you all managed to enjoy some quality family time together at some point. It has been lovely to welcome all the children back to Poverest and this week we started with our end of Spring celebration assembly, which we moved to the start of this term as we just didn’t have the time with all the Easter celebrations in the last week of term.

Congratulations to both of our attendance winners who walked away with £100 vouchers for a fun family day out. A reminder that every child starts again for the Summer Term, and every child who only misses 3 days or fewer will be entered into the next draw in July.

Our midweek Picture News assembly looked at new housing developments and what is needed in communities, such as hospitals, schools, travel networks, sports centres, etc. I then spoke about the potential redevelopment of the Adult Education centre next to our school and how the park on Tillingbourne Green will be improved for everyone should the planning permission be granted.

Today we celebrated our achievements in our Tree of Success assembly – a huge well done to Damson class for having 100% attendance this week!

Year 2 had their school trip to the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace this week. The pictures looked fantastic as the children learned about the coronation and the stables, as well as exploring different artifacts and trying on different items, including a crown!

Many Year 1 children looked fantastic dressed up for their Explorers’ Day this week. They were all very excited, telling me about what they found and what they were searching for. The vice chair of governors, Michael Parker, Buddy and I joined Willow and Walnut on a walk around our school on Wednesday morning, which was lovely. The children were hunting for different flowers. It is amazing how wonderful the gardens look when you take your time to walk and look. Very worthwhile just taking a slow walk with your children sometimes and talk about what you can see and hear.

I spoke with Mytime Active this week, as they are keen to push out free health checks for everyone over 18. The uptake of these has been low in the borough, but I have offered to host them at Poverest for a day or two for anyone interested. I think it’s always best to have a health check as prevention is always better than a cure. Click the link in the email sent if you would like one and if there is enough interest, I will book them into school for you.

From Monday, the senior leadership team will be moving gate duties so that we have covered all the different entrances across the year. I will join Mr Duffin at the KS2 gate, Mrs Arnold will be at the hall door, Mrs Jewitt will be by EYFS and Mrs Mills will be at the main gate.

Poverest will have its own ‘Wear Green to be Seen’ Day next Tuesday for Autism Awareness. The week occurred over the first part of the Easter Holidays but we want to make sure we properly recognise it. We are very proud of our Orchard children and all the children in the mainstream school who are autistic. There will be a special assembly held in classes as we continue to raise awareness of autism across our whole school community. Please wear something green if you can on that day.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend.

Mr Haylock

Focus Week – The Meadow

We are all back after the Easter break and fishing off our eggs! One child made me smile by saying that he felt like he hadn’t been in The Meadow for a year! I suppose two weeks can feel like a year when you are only 6. This week I have introduced the Calming Kittens to the Reception and Year 1 children and we have been naming and talking about our emotions and discussing that we are allowed to have all the different emotions. The children even realised that everyone has different emotions and adults can have them too. Going forward we will be looking at how we deal with our emotions and what strategies we can use to help us.
