March 2026

Issue 42

I hope you’ve had a wonderful week. As we approach the end of the term, I wanted to share some of the fantastic things happening at Poverest Primary School.

This week, our Senior Leadership Team has been meeting with every class teacher to review pupil progress. These meetings are a vital way for us to look closely at each child’s learning and plan the best ways to support their individual journeys next term. We remain fully committed to ensuring every child has the guidance they need to thrive.

It was lovely to see the children arrive in their own clothes on Tuesday! Thank you so much for the many Easter egg donations. We are busy wrapping them up for our big raffle next Friday—make sure to get your tickets soon for a chance to win!

Our pupils have been busy learning out in the community this week:

Blossom Class had a fantastic trip to the local shops on Wednesday. This was a wonderful way for our youngest learners to practice communication and language skills, such as naming items like "red apples" and "cold milk," while following simple instructions like" put it in the basket.

Holly and Hazel Classes visited Willow’s Bird of Prey and Wildlife Trail at Coolings Garden Centre on Friday. They had an amazing time connecting with nature and learning about wildlife in the fresh air.

Thank you to our Year 2 parents who attended our meeting on Tuesday regarding the upcoming Frylands overnight trip in July. Year 2 are very excited about this adventure!

Important Dates for Next Week:

Next week is a busy final week of term:

  • Parents’ Evening: These meetings take place on Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th March. If you haven’t booked yet, please contact the school office to arrange a meeting with your class teacher.
  • Easter Celebrations (Friday 27th March): At 9:00 am: Please gather in the KS2 playground for our annual Easter Bonnet Parade.  Once parents have left the site, the children will enjoy an Easter hunt around the school grounds. This is a free event run by the Friends of Poverest and every child will receive a treat to bring home.
  •  In our Friday assembly, the children have the chance to win an Easter Egg in our assembly raffle, which is also a free event.
  • Early Finish on Friday the 27th of March.  School breaks up for the Easter holidays from 1:25 pm. Please see dojo for the pick up times for each year group.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Focus Week - Year 5

What a busy and enjoyable time we have had in Year 5 so far!
In English, we have been exploring Hidden Figures and have written our own biographies inspired by this. We have also been writing creatively using a range of exciting stimuli, which has really allowed our imaginations to shine. Recently, we finished our work on Odysseus and created our own myths. We had great fun with this topic and were incredibly creative in our storytelling.

In Maths, we have been looking at fractions in more detail. We have been adding, subtracting, and comparing fractions, as well as developing our understanding of decimals and finding fraction equivalence. We have worked really hard to understand decimals and have been using manipulatives to help support our learning.

In Science, we have been studying life cycles and learning about the differences between them. We are especially excited because we currently have our own caterpillars in class, which will soon be turning into butterflies!

In DT, we have been making our own soft toys using a blanket stitch. We carefully designed, cut out, and stitched our toys. We thoroughly enjoyed this project, and the results have been amazing.

We also had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day. We came to school dressed as either a book character or a word, and the outfits were incredibly impressive. We created our own reading café, where we shared our books while enjoying a biscuit. We also created our own version of Pinocchio, wrote play scripts, and performed them using puppets. Year 5 took part in a drama performance where each class had a part in the Pinocchio story. At the end of the day, we showcased our part to the rest of the school.

It has been a wonderful and productive time in Year 5, and we are very proud of all our hard work and creativity!
