A Week of Curiosity and Creativity at Poverest

It has been a truly wonderful week at school, topped off by a very special Tree of Success Assembly this morning. It was a joy to see the children’s faces light up as we shared photos from World Book Day. Every class showcased incredible work inspired by their favourite stories and characters—it is clear that a love of reading continues to thrive across the school.

Orchard Tea Party
A huge thank you to all the parents from the Orchard classes who joined us this afternoon for our tea party. Mrs Jewitt and Mrs Arnold were so pleased to visit and commented on the lovely, warm atmosphere. The children did a fantastic job preparing delicious treats, and we all thoroughly enjoyed sampling their hard work!

Science and Discovery
Our budding scientists have been busy throughout the week in our Science Workshops. The children have been learning how to investigate the world around them, asking brilliant questions and discovering how to find the answers. It has been fantastic to see such a spark of curiosity in every classroom.

Skills on Wheels
Out on the playground, some of our Year 2 children took part in Scootsure sessions. They worked hard on their balance and safety skills, and I was delighted to see them proudly wearing their new badges on their scooters as a reward for their focus and hard work.

Sporting Success
In sports news, our Lacrosse team represented us brilliantly at the tournament at Parkhouse Rugby Club on Thursday. One of our teams took 2nd place and will represent Poverest at the Regionals. They played with fantastic spirit and truly demonstrated our PROUD values throughout the competition. Well done to everyone involved!

Mother’s Day Crafts
Finally, a huge thank you to the FOP for organising the Mother’s Day crafts this week. The children have put so much heart into their handmade gifts, and I hope they are cherished this weekend. All funds raised towards the school, so thank you to all who contributed.

Spring Bulb Competition Update
The judging took place today! I won’t reveal the results just yet, but certificates will be presented at next week’s Tree of Success Assembly. Watch this space in next week’s newsletter for photos of our winners!

Have a lovely weekend

Mrs Jewitt

Focus Week - Year 4

Year 4 have had an incredibly busy and exciting few weeks filled with learning, creativity, and fun. The children have shown great enthusiasm across all subjects and have truly impressed with their hard work and positive attitudes.

Mathematics

In Maths, the focus has been on fractions, particularly mixed numbers and improper fractions. The children have worked diligently to understand how to convert between the two and apply their knowledge to problem-solving. Their dedication to Arithmetic practice has really paid off, with fantastic improvements seen in recent test results.

English

In English, the class has been reading Pinocchio by Michael Morpurgo. This version tells the story from Pinocchio’s own perspective, which has sparked thoughtful discussions about character voice and storytelling. The children have enjoyed exploring the themes of honesty, growth, and adventure through this classic tale while looking at diary entries told by Pinocchio.

World Book Day

World Book Day was a highlight of the term. The children took part in a special workshop where the whole school came together to create a dance that told the story of Pinocchio. It was wonderful to see everyone moving, laughing, and expressing the story through dance.

Science

Science lessons have been full of excitement as the topic of sound and vibrations has come to life through hands-on experiments. The children have explored how sound travels, how vibrations create noise, and how pitch and volume can change. Their curiosity and enthusiasm have made each lesson a joy.

History

In History, the class has been learning about the Anglo-Saxons and the Scots. They have discovered how these groups influenced life in Britain, including how many place names across the UK originated from Anglo-Saxon words. The children have enjoyed connecting history to the world around them.

Physical Education

One of our PE has been about gymnastics this term. The children have been practising their balance, coordination, and strength through activities such as swinging on the bar, perfecting frog stands, and mastering cartwheels. Their confidence and skills are growing with each session.

Design and Technology

DT has been a real highlight, with the children designing and building their own sling-shot cars. From constructing the chassis and attaching the wheels to designing and decorating the car bodies, the process has been both creative and educational. The final test—racing the cars down the corridor—was a thrilling way to explore air resistance in action.

Outdoor Fun

With the weather improving, the trim trail is open again, giving everyone more opportunities to move, climb, and play during the day. It’s been wonderful to see the children enjoying the outdoors and staying active.

Celebrations and Special Events

The past few weeks have been filled with special events, including World Book Day, Holi, Science Week, and Mother’s Day. Each celebration has brought colour, joy, and togetherness to our school community. And of course, Fridays wouldn’t be complete without Mr. McManus and his famous dances, bringing energy and smiles to the classrooms—before the teachers step in to calm things down again!

Year 4 have truly made wonderful memories this term, combining learning with laughter and creativity. What a fantastic time it has been!

Science Workshop

Science Week Fun!

It’s been British Science Week and the children have been having a fantastic time exploring and experimenting. This year’s theme has focused on scientific questions, encouraging the children to think carefully about the world around them and ask their own curious questions.

One of the highlights of the week was a science workshop where the children were able to take part in a range of exciting experiments. They loved watching elephant toothpaste erupt, seeing bottle caps fly off during a pressure experiment, and exploring sound waves. They also investigated ideas such as floating and sinking through hands-on activities.

Outside the canteen, a number of mini-experiments have been set up to spark even more curiosity. The children have been investigating which bubble wand creates the best bubbles, testing different objects to see if they are magnetic, and challenging themselves to build the tallest and strongest tower.

It has been wonderful to see so much enthusiasm, curiosity and teamwork throughout the week. The children have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to explore science in such fun and engaging ways while developing their own scientific questions
