Issue

Welcome back to the second-half term of the Spring Term, at least it has begun to feel a little more like Spring and the daffodils the children planted in Forest School last year are beginning to come up.

Mr Duffin and some Year 6 children supported the local authority in some weeding and re-planting of the Micro-Forest on Tillingbourne Green on Tuesday. It has been interesting for the children to see and work out why one half of the Micro Forest has grown so well over the last year and why the other half has not. We've come to the conclusion that the lower half is overly wet in the winter but does not get enough shade in the summer! The children will be supporting the mulching of the micro-forest in April. If you haven't seen it yet, it is worth a walk around. It will be interesting to see how it further develops in the coming months and years.

Year 3 had a couple of fantastic trips to the Children's Victoria and Albert Museum in London this week. The children had a great time exploring the museum and also creating their own 3D pieces!

Year 6 have been busy learning to ride their bikes safely, which will be a key skill should any decide to cycle to their new secondary schools in September. I know that they had a fun time learning to ride their bikes in a safe manner.

Next week we have our World Book Day on Thursday. The theme this year is to dress up as 'A Word', although if your child has a favourite character, they can, of course, dress up as that instead. We will be having a parade around the main/KS2 playground, which will start at 9 am on Thursday. Once you have dropped your children off at the usual time, please make your way to the playground and stand around the edge of the Netball courts. The children will be completing fun activities during the day to continue to motivate them to read, including a Pinocchio Dance Workshop.

Just a pre-warning about scheduled traffic lights on the junction of Lee Green and Cray Valley Road from some point on Monday and maybe for the duration of the week. It's unknown what disruption this will cause, if any, but be prepared to alter your drop-off and pick-up arrangements if you drive that way.

Have a great weekend

Focus Week - Year 2

We have had a wonderful first week back after the half term break in Year 2.

We formed an explorers’ club after deciding where in the world we’d like to visit and then wrote a set of rules for explorers to follow. We then had a surprise parcel arrive on Wednesday morning and saw that it was for the Poverest Explorer Club. The children were very excited to unwrap a book titled Dear Earth, which we have started reading and have used the beautiful illustrations to write some poetry today.

In Maths we have been finishing our unit on multiplication and division using our 2x, 5x and 10x tables. The children have been working really hard to solve calculations and problems and had a great time testing their knowledge on TT Rockstars!

We have started our new Geography unit, exploring why our world is wonderful. We used atlases to locate the capitals of the countries that make up the United Kingdom and then used Google Earth to spot different physical and human features of each country.

In music we created a vocal soundscape of an imaginary journey to a new planet, we’d named Planet X. We came up with different sounds to represent each noise we would hear on the journey and had great fun putting this together to tell the story of the journey using the sounds. On Thursday we had our weekly visit from Aliya from Gro-Health who taught us all about having a growth mindset and we've been practising using the phrase "I can't do it...yet" as well as "I'm going to have a go!"
