Issue 42

It was wonderful to see so many of you for our Spring Term Concert this week and to provide the children with an audience to perform to. It is a great time to show off all the wonderful, different types of music and musical instruments we teach at Poverest.

Year 5 had a wonderful time at the Tate Modern this week, and saw lots of different types of artwork - a few pieces certainly encouraged discussion amongst the children. A gentle reminder about Dojo and posting updates. Our staff do their utmost best to keep you aware of trips, however, this is not an expectation. There will be times when Wifi isn't available and not all staff are able to use their own 4g/5g connections for school-based work. The staff's first priority will always be to ensure the safety of your children, and they will only update Dojo when it is safe to do so and when they are able to do so due to internet access.

This week was also a Poverest first, as we hosted our first Darts match with children from Farnborough school. Both schools had a great time playing a variety of different games. Not only are children enjoying the game, but there is a lot of Maths learning as well.

Friday was NSPCC number day, all the children were encouraged to rehearse their times tables on TT RockStars in a competition with other schools. We will find out how well we did next week!

Please be considerate of the school street and in particular, do not reverse up Tillingbourne Green from Lee Green. This is illegal and can lead to points on your licence and a fine, as well as being very dangerous towards other road users. Please also remember to not park in the Adult Education Centre when dropping off or collecting your child(ren). This car park is not part of the school and is for the sole use by the people visiting the Adult Education Centre.

Another reminder about packed lunches, we have very few in school as we serve 400 hot meals every day. Every packed lunch must be a healthy lunch - this means no added sugar, salt or fats (No chocolate, sweets, crisps, etc.). Children who have a healthy lunch are also able to concentrate and behave better in the afternoons and this allows for improved learning.  Our healthy school status is also at risk if we don't ensure all children eat healthily during school.

Next week is Children's Mental Health week and there will be lots of activities during the week to promote activities which support having a positive mental wellbeing. The FOP are running a disco on Wednesday for all the children and on Friday we will host our Celebration of Learning from 2 pm where you can catch up with the latest learning from your child, talk to the teachers and find out what they have been doing for Mental Health Week - there will be stories about Yoga, which I will do my best with!

Have a lovely weekend!

Focus Week - Reception

It’s hard to believe how quickly this half term has flown by! Reception have had a wonderfully busy few weeks, filled with lots of exploring, creating and learning together. The children have shown great interest and eagerness to learn, and it’s been a pleasure to see their confidence and independence continue to grow.

Our topic this half term has been Transport, and we’ve explored lots of different modes of transport, from cars, trains and buses to boats and planes. The children enjoyed comparing old and new forms of transport, spotting similarities and differences, and talking about how transport has changed over time. We also explored maps, looking at what they are used for, and even had a go at making our own maps, thinking carefully about routes and landmarks.

In Literacy, we have loved sharing the stories The Train Ride, Duck in the Truck and You Can’t Take an Elephant on the Bus. These books inspired some brilliant learning, including writing predictions, speech bubbles, and simple notes. We also spent lots of time learning about rhyming words, with the children becoming very good at spotting and creating rhymes of their own.

In Maths, we have been learning about length, weight and capacity, using practical equipment to compare, measure and explore. We compared the length of everyday objects by saying whether they were “longer” or “shorter”, and we used a variety of containers to explore filling them up and then emptying them again. The children have also been working on the composition of numbers up to 5, building numbers in different ways and explaining their thinking using concrete resources like counters and cubes.

Our Understanding the World learning has been very hands-on and exciting! We investigated different materials to see whether they were waterproof or not, and explored whether objects float or sink. The children will use their findings to design and make their own boats, testing them out and talking about what worked well.

The children have also thoroughly enjoyed their dance lessons with Giselle this half term, where they have been developing their coordination, listening skills and confidence while having lots of fun moving to music.

The children loved taking part in a drama workshop where they had to pretend to be toys in a toyshop, and we also had a visit from author Neal Zetter, who shared some of his funny poems with us.

It has been a joy to see how much the children have learned and grown this half term – we’re very proud of them all!
