Issue 42

This week started with a very special Blue Monday event. Blue Monday was originally named for being the most depressing day but is now recognised as a day where people should do something special to boost their own mental health. The PE team arranged and led the day for us, which gave every child the chance to do something creative and be encouraged to just take the time to talk to each other with the aim of boosting each other's mental health. In very busy lives and very busy schools it was so nice to just see children, sit, draw and talk to each other about whatever they wanted to. It also highlighted the need to do this more often and enjoy being in each other's company. The staff were included too and were encouraged to stop and take time for lunch and time to talk to each other in the staff room. When I started teaching, everyone stopped for the whole of lunchtime but with such an increased workload in education, and many other industries, that rarely happens anymore. It was an incredibly powerful day and the PE team have a couple more ideas to do something similar again in the Spring and Summer.

On Wednesday evening the Governors joined the SLT to discuss the latest data for the school and to gain an understanding of the continual improvement journey we are on. They were very pleased to see the reading data and how many children are now reading regularly and the positive impact this has across the curriculum. The highlight though was the continued improvement in attendance and the fact we are now above the National Average for the first time since the COVID pandemic. Thank you to all our families for the commitment to regular school attendance – let’s keep it up and ensure we keep this up all year.

Today Mrs Jewitt and I met with Afact school leaders. This is where we support each other on ideas to improve our schools further and enhance the whole school experience for every member of their communities.

Everyone at Poverest wishes you a lovely weekend, try to stop and just take some time to spend with your families and talk to each other. A nice walk, complete a puzzle or just do a doodle drawing together. You will feel better for it!

Focus Week - The Orchard

The Orchard have had another great week!

In PE Blossom class are learning how to throw and catch a ball, jumping, counting to 10 and hoola-hoop spinning.

We also have been learning how to follow simple instructions, so we played Simon Says, and the children were very good at following them. We really enjoyed it.

Whilst learning how to follow instructions, the children made chocolate chip cookies as a class. They were supported to measure and add the correct ingredients to make the dough. They were then cooked by the adults for the children to enjoy once cooled.

This week we have been looking at the book called The Duck in the Truck and have made our own red trucks out of junk and a large one to enjoy ourselves in the classroom. The children are looking at ducks and where they live and what they eat.

Maths in Blossom has been fun, learning how to write and count to 5 to their favourite song Five little speckle frogs, whilst also using the frog teddies to jump in and out of our pretend pond.

Unfortunately, we have had a lot of indoor playtimes due to the icy and wet weather conditions. However, we have had lots of fun playing different games in the class. The children are getting very good at dominoes and are now beating the adults!

Exploration of colour and colour mixing has really developed their knowledge of primary and secondary colours.

Damson class have been looking at the workings of a fairground wheel, then designing and making their own models.

Mulberry have enjoyed creating freeze frames based on the story of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, this enabled them to really feel part of the story.  The photo shared here shows how they would react to a rat entering the kitchen!
