Issue 42

This is such an exciting time of year in school! Our school has been buzzing with festive energy and groups preparing for the various Christmas shows next week.

This week, our school choir made us incredibly proud by performing at the Glades shopping centre, representing Poverest Primary with their wonderful musical talents. It's always special to see our pupils sharing their skills beyond our school walls.

This week has been packed with so many trips and visits. On Tuesday, our brilliant Year 5 explorers stepped into the London Paradox museum, where nothing is quite what it seems and every corner challenges what they thought they knew! From gravity-defying rooms to illusions that made them question reality, the excitement was off the charts! The staff were so proud of how well the children behaved during the day. On Friday, our amazing Digital Leaders spent the day at Bromley High School for the Techathon — and WOW, what an experience! They created stunning 3D decorations using Tinkercad, produced their own stop-motion animations, and even programmed a timer game using Micro:bits. The excitement didn’t stop there… In the afternoon, they stepped into the world of augmented reality using Sandbox run by discoveryeduk, bringing digital creations to life right before their eyes! We're so proud of their creativity, teamwork, and innovation!. Year 1 enjoyed a delightful trip to the Churchill Theatre, watching "Robin Hood and the Christmas Cracker" with the children now hugely excited for Christmas!

Our recent Celebration of Learning on Thursday went very well and it was lovely to see so many of you. The children are always so excited to proudly share their learning with you.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported our Christmas Fair on Friday. The event was a tremendous success, and this wouldn't have been possible without the incredible effort from our staff and the Friends of Poverest. The hours of hard work put into preparing this event truly demonstrate our strong school community.

I hope those parents attending the younger children's performances next week have a lovely, enjoyable time. Another reminder for the break-up times for the last day of term next Friday, all at the usual locations:

  • The Orchard: 1:15pm
  • EYFS: 1:20pm
  • Key Stage 1: 1:25pm
  • Key Stage 2: 1:30pm

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend.

Mr Haylock

Focus Week - Year 3

Year 3 had a fantastic trip to the Science Museum last Friday, where we visited the Wonder Lab and experienced a ‘Feel the Force’ workshop. ‘Forces and Magnets’  has been a hot topic in Science for this half term. We have been carrying out different investigations on how magnets attract and repel and what are magnetic or non-magnetic materials.

In English we have been  learning about the text ‘Escape From Pompeii’, which linked to our Geography topic ‘Why do People live near volcanoes?’ We have written descriptive settings, created a character analysis and held a debate whether the characters should stay or leave during a volcanic eruption. At the end of the text, we wrote a newspaper report. We also wrote a WW1poem called Hush, remembering soldiers from past and present using powerful imagery.

In Maths, we have been learning addition and subtraction using the column method. Our focus for our timestable this half term has been 3. Now we have begun to delve into the world of multiplication and division, thinking about arrays using practical resources.

PSHE has been about health and wellbeing, where we have learnt about eating a healthy diet and what a healthy dinner might look like. Also, we have been focusing on our identity and who we are. Additionally, we have learnt about breaking down barriers and how to be resilient-which is one of our school values.

‘What is Special About Being Human?’ Is our RE topic that has continued this half term. We have been comparing our beliefs with others. Through talking and drawing, we have explored how colour and images have been used in a piece of artwork to express a particular idea about the soul and inner self.

In Computing our focus has been on the journey inside a computer, focusing on key vocabulary and functions of the parts of digital devices.
