December 2025

Issue

The Christmas Spirit arrived at Poverest this week with the fabulous Christmas Experience organised by our wonderful Friends of Poverest. The children were able to meet Santa, make food for the reindeer and decorate biscuits with Christmas-themed Icing. The hall felt very wintry and was a lovely occasion for the children, whilst raising more funds for our outdoor classroom.
The exciting events continued with the Y3 trip to the Science Museum and our Digital Leaders met other digital leaders from other primary schools at Bromley High for the annual Tecathon, where they got to try out very new technology that schools can look to purchase - I'm sure I will be given a wish list on Monday morning!

The School Governing Body met on Wednesday for their Autumn meeting to find out how the school is progressing across a whole range of areas. It is a lovely time for me to share all the successes we are having in continuing to make the school an even better place for the whole community. We celebrated our end-of-year results, our much-improved attendance figures and the changes to how we teach writing.

Tonight we have our school quiz nights, tables are still available if you want to come along at 6:30pm!

Next week, we will host our first Celebration of Learning Event on Thursday at 2pm. You can arrive early to school to go into the classroom with your child and look at their work so far this year. You can arrive at any time between 2pm and 3pm. And on Friday, we have our Christmas Fair, which I hope you will be able to support, even if just for a few minutes.
Have a great weekend!
Many thanks,
Mr P Haylock

Focus Week - Year 2

Chestnut and Cedar classes have been very busy this week with all their learning. We have been continuing our learning with our book ‘Jim and the Beanstalk’. We have been learning to retell the story using actions and by drawing story maps and have written some super sentences using time conjunctions, e.g. first, then, next, finally.
In Maths we have been subtracting two 2-digit numbers. We have been using dienes to represent the tens and ones and have been learning how to exchange a ten stick for ten one cubes when we cross a ten boundary. It has been tricky stuff, but we have been so proud of the children’s determination and how they have been helping each other.
In Design and Technology we have been learning about structures to make a chair for a bear and have been making our designs this week (see photo).
We have got into the festive spirit this week in Year 2 as we have been rehearsing our nativity; ‘Wriggly Nativity’. The children have been fantastic at learning the songs, helping us to choreograph dances and working out stage directions. We cannot wait to put on our shows for you in the last week of term! On Wednesday, some of us enjoyed some festive activities, arranged by our wonderful FoP, which included meeting Father Christmas, decorating biscuits and making reindeer food.
In Geography, we have been learning about hot and cold places and this week we focused on our local weather and climate. We used thermometers and rain gauges to measure the temperature and amount of rainfall and then checked it against the school’s digital weather station.
Today, we were lucky enough to have Matt Barnard in to talk to us all about teeth and dental hygiene! We have been learning about hygiene and our bodies in PSHE, and he brought all this learning to life this morning in an exciting and informative presentation.
