November 2025

Issue

Welcome back to the second half of the Autumn Term. It has been lovely to see everyone again and welcome the new children who have joined our school this week. The half-term was busy with contractors but I'm pleased to say the roof improvement works are all completed and signed off. The remaining doors in the school, which were not fire-safe doors, have all been replaced with just some minor decoration to be completed in the evenings over the next couple of weeks. The new security cameras have been installed, replacing some outdated equipment as well.

In other exciting news, the new Outdoor Classroom is booked to be installed next week. Due to some underground cabling of utilities, the siting of the classroom will now be inside our Forest School. This meant that yesterday we had some quick clearance to do of the older rotting fence and smaller Forest School hut, a huge thank you to Mrs Marshall, Mrs Duffin and Mr Scott for helping to get the site ready.

In an assembly this week, the local authority visited to discuss road safety and our school street with the children. The benefits of walking and scooting to school are huge, as well as the reduced pollution around our school site. The children were all reminded of the "Stop, Look, Listen" approach, but the word "Think" is added at the end. It is important we all think when travelling on or near roads and this applies to us as adults as well.

I hosted our termly Parent Forum on Tuesday and the minutes are on the website for all to see. A key area for discussion is the officially announced plans to redevelop the Adult Education Centre site with 44 homes. The local authority has worked with us closely and kept us informed of the developments and listened to what we have had to say. They have worked with the children already about improving the Tillingbourne Green playground and they ran a planning session with the year 5 children on Thursday. The number of parking spaces has been raised by lots of you and I will personally take those comments back to them. Works could be around 2 years away but the local authority has already said to me they will work with the school to ensure that the construction will be carried out in a way that causes minimal disruption to the school.

I wish Year 6 the most fabulous time next week on their residential. I am looking forward to visiting on Wednesday. The year 6 residential is one of my favourite school calendar events and I know they will all have a fantastic time. A huge thank you to all the staff giving up their time to supervise the children during the week, they are giving up their time - some with very young children themselves- and these fabulous opportunities for Poverest children cannot happen without the generosity of our staff.

I wish everyone a lovely weekend and enjoy the slightly milder November weather whilst it's here.

Focus Week - Reception

The children in Reception have come back from the half term break full of enthusiasm and curiosity this week, ready for lots of exciting new learning experiences!

This week, we have been learning all about Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Light. We read the story Binny’s Diwali, which helped us learn about how Binny and her family celebrate this special festival. The children enjoyed talking about the events in the story and thinking about what Diwali means to different people. They wrote lists of items for Binny’s gift basket, created Diwali cards to send to her, and shared ideas about how they might celebrate a special timel with their own families.

The children also loved hearing and retelling the story of Rama and Sita, and learning about how people celebrate Diwali by decorating their homes with lights, making Rangoli patterns, and sharing special food with family and friends. In Music, we enjoyed listening to traditional Indian music and dancing with ribbons and scarves to celebrate this colourful festival!

We have also been exploring 2D shapes. The children have been busy naming and sorting shapes, looking for them in the classroom and outdoor area, and creating their own shape pictures using paint and objects from around the classroom. It’s been wonderful to see their creativity and growing confidence with describing the properties of shapes, for example "straight sides”, “corners”, “curved side” etc.

This week also saw our very first Forest School session! The children were very excited to put on their outdoor clothes and learn the Forest School rules. They explored the area, played team games, and enjoyed discovering natural treasures. It was a fantastic start, and we’re looking forward to many more adventures outdoors this term.

We can’t wait to see what the rest of the half term brings!
