October 2025

Issue

In this week's assembly, I spoke to the children about the introduction of black history month at Poverest. We like to celebrate all cultures throughout the year but use the month of October to put a further focus on this important issue. I spoke to the children about where we all come from and the fact it’s much more complicated than our place of birth. All of us have a rich history of different cultures. I shared the fact that my children have a Burmese background, courtesy of their grandmother and they often celebrated Burmese culture during school events. I also shared the story of Walter Tull, who experienced many challenges in his life, including racism but went on to be the first black officer in World War I from the Windrush generation, as well as originally being a very talented footballer.

Also this week, we had our individual class photos and the new company will issue these with you shortly. We expect them to be a much more affordable option for you all.

On Wednesday, we held our first open morning and I was incredibly proud to share all of the fantastic things that Poverest offers our children from fabulous sporting and musical experiences down to academic support as well as provision for our gifted and talented children. Thank you to all of the staff and children, especially year six for conducting the tours.

On Thursday, we celebrated National Poetry Day with children enjoying poetry in their classrooms. As adults, our experience of poetry might not have been as enjoyable as we would have hoped but the modern-day poetry aimed towards children is of excellent quality and very amusing to the children. Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes is still a favourite of mine and my children enjoyed listening to them at bedtime when they were in primary school.

Next week we have our African Dance Workshop in the Hall on Wednesday and Thursday, please do contribute to the cost if you have not already. We love to provide children with lots of rich experiences across the year but they all come at a cost so the more payments we get the more events we can offer and the better the experience for all of our children.

Have a wonderful weekend

Focus Week - Year 4

Year 4 has had a wonderfully busy and positive start to the year. The children have shown fantastic effort in embracing their new routines and responsibilities. They have quickly learned the rules and expectations, settling in with enthusiasm and determination.

It has been inspiring to see how well they have adapted to Year 4 life, approaching their learning with focus and energy. The classroom is already buzzing with curiosity, teamwork, and a strong sense of community.

Our different topics have engaged the children from start to finish. In Science, we have been learning about the digestive system and teeth. The children particularly enjoyed a hands-on activity where they practised brushing teeth on laminated mouths, experimenting with different types of toothbrushes to discover which worked best. This practical approach brought lots of fun and laughter while reinforcing important learning.

In Geography, the children have been exploring the fascinating world of the rainforest, learning about its importance and the ways we can help protect it. To bring their learning closer to home, they also enjoyed a trip to the local woodlands, where they interviewed members of the public about how the area is used and what improvements could be made. This gave them a real sense of how geography connects to everyday life and the importance of caring for our environment.

In English, the children have just started reading Granny Came Here on the Empire Windrush as part of their learning for Black History Month. They have been researching inspirational Black women who were heroes and changed history, using this knowledge to inspire their own writing. This work will lead into writing a letter of encouragement to Ava, a little girl in the story who needs to dress up at school as someone inspirational. The children have thoroughly enjoyed this learning so far, and there is great excitement to see the thoughtful and creative letters they will produce.

All the adults working with Year 4 are incredibly proud of the children’s hard work, positive attitudes, and the way they have risen to the challenges of this new school year. It promises to be an exciting and successful year ahead.
