Issue 42

This week has seen The Orchard enjoy a day out at Christmas Tree Farm and Year 2 visit St Paul's Cathedral in London as part of their topic on the Great Fire of London. Both groups had a great time putting a real-life experience to their learning in school. We have also met with the Outdoor Classroom company on their site visit to discuss how the installation can occur. It's fantastic to have raised the money so quickly for a brilliant resource for the current and future school community. It could even be completed before the end of the calendar year!

I had a bit of learning myself this week as I spent the day learning about A.I. in education at Canva HQ in London. A.I. can be a scary topic but Canva has developed a fantastic resource which is guarded against outside fears and is suitable for all school-aged children to use. They are also providing their resources to all the children and teachers at Poverest to use for free. I was amazed at what it can do and I look forward to seeing how we can include it within our curriculum. A major aim at Poverest is to ensure our children become creators of technology rather than just consumers and Canva will help us to further achieve this.

This afternoon, we had a wonderful display of musical talent for the Weeks' Cup. Children who play a musical instrument performed a piece of their choosing individually, with the winner walking away with the trophy. A huge congratulations to all the performers. They were all very impressive!

Unfortunately, our Harvest Festival, which was due to be held today, has had to be postponed until next Tuesday morning. All of the donations will still be donated to the local Foodbank on Chipperfield Road and we will still accept further donations on Monday and Tuesday next week.

Next Wednesday is our first open morning for new children due to start in September 2026. Places can be booked via our school website, should you know any families that would be interested.

Next Thursday is the school census day, which is a very important day for the school and its finances, so please try to ensure your child is in school and on time. It is also the day of our individual and sibling school photos. We are using a new company this year. You will be able to mix and match photos in your packages and it should be much more affordable compared to previous years. We will automatically take photos of all siblings this year as well - no need to request that we do.

I wish you all a fabulous weekend.

Focus Week - Year 3

Year 3 have settled in well and have been really busy with lots of new learning.

In English we have been  learning about the text ‘ The First Drawing’ which is linked to our History topic Stone Age, Iron Age and Bronze Age. Focusing on different elements of grammar such as using verbs and adjectives we retold the narrative in our own words as if we were stone age children. We are now reading the ‘BFG’ which will lead to us writing our own chapter using lots of different writing skills.

In Maths, we have been learning about place value starting with representing numbers to 100.

This small step provides the opportunity to revisit and consolidate their learning before moving on to numbers beyond 100. We then moved on to partitioning numbers, representing numbers on a numberline. Estimation and comparisons. We will soon be moving on to addition and subtraction, spotting the pattern, using the operation with exchange leading to inverse operations.

In Art and Design we have been using our own observation skills to describe shapes and textures in objects and learning about the four shading rules. We used simple shapes to build initial sketches of an animal in our sketchbooks. Then using charcoal, we copied the sketch onto sandpaper to recreate the style of cave artists. Finally using natural pigments we mixed colours for the animal’s body.

‘Movement and Nutrition’ has been a hot topic in Science for this half term. We have been carrying out different investigations on how our bodies work. We have made split pin skeletons and moving fingers to show us how the joints work in the hand.

As part of our PSHE, Year 3 are having weekly Paws B mindfulness lessons. During these lessons we have been learning about specific areas of the brain and how these affect our ability to focus and make good choices. We are also learning different breathing techniques that can support us in school and at home.

‘What is Special About Being Human?’ Is our RE topic this half term. We have been comparing our beliefs with others. Through talking and drawing, we have explored how colour and images have been used in a piece of artwork to express a particular idea about the soul and inner self.

Spanish has been interesting as we have been learning greetings in Spanish. We have also been practising to make an introduction in Spanish in the correct accent..

In Computing our focus has been on networks. We have looked at how we are connected and how the network functions globally.

Forest School with Mrs. Callaghan has been really fun. We have been building dens and creating stories using our senses with the items found on our nature treasure hunt.
