Spring 2, Week 3

As part of science week we have created an experiment to see the effect the mummification process would have had on the bodies which were mummified. We sliced and removed the insides of the fruit, just as the Egyptians would have removed the organs. We then created a natron mixture from salt and bicarbonate of soda and covered the fruit. We then left it for five days to see the effect it would have.

Spring 2, Week 2

This week we have thoroughly enjoyed English week. We created our own letters from objects in the classroom, using personification ( We based our ideas on The Day The Crayons Quit) We loves representing blue crayon in the parade and also taking part in paired reading with Holly class.

Spring 2, Week 1

This week we continued to work on our investigation skills in Science. We set up a test to find out how the weight of different objects changed in air and in water. We ensured that we only changed one variable it order to make sure that it was a fair test. We discovered that the weight of an object reduced when weighed in water and learnt about the effect of upthrust.

Spring 1, Week 5

This week we have written a balanced argument about life as pharaoh and a slave in ancient Greek times. In maths we have worked hard on our understanding of fractions, finding equivalents, simplifying fractions and converting improper fractions to mixed numbers. We have continued to work on databases in computing and explored friction in science.

Spring 1, Week 4

This week was multicultural week and we have had a great time learning about different countries and their cultures. We learnt about Spanish festivals; native trees to England and the traditions in Ukraine . We also took part in a Chinese dance workshop (take a look at our pictures to see what fun we had)

Spring 1, Week 3

This week in English we have been enjoying retelling the story of ‘The Time-Slip Scarab’. We worked in groups to add actions to each section to help us to retell the story. We then created freeze frames for each part of the story, thinking about conveying the characters feeling through their facial expressions and body language.

Spring 1, Week 2

This week year 5 took part in an Egyptian theatre workshop day. The workshop focused on many elements of the ancient Egyptian life, the children were engaged in the characters and supported them in solving challenges to remove the curse which had been placed on the explorer.

They also learnt Egyptian stories from different Egyptian gods and supported them in retelling the stories through actions. We are looking forward to using this in our upcoming work.

Spring 1, Week 1

This week in Science we began our new topic 'Forces'. We looked at the different forces which affect a falling object and used this to investigate how the surface area of an object affects the rate at which it falls. We kept all the variables the same, changing only one variable which was the surface area.

We discovered from the investigation that the smaller the surface area the faster it falls due to less air resistance acting on the object.

Autumn 2, Week 6

This week in science we have been learning all about the phases of the moon, we really enjoyed showing the phases of the moon 🌑 🌒 🌓 with our biscuits. We then drew the phases of the moon and named them.

We also enjoyed taking part in the TT Rock stars battles this week again Oak and Elm class. Unfortunately we didn’t win, however we did increase our overall speed. We also made and played our own board games, using all the maths knowledge we have learnt this term.

Autumn 2, Week 5

This week we have enjoyed reading our new book ‘The Rain Player’ based on our topic. We learnt all about the rain god Chac and we wrote missing dialogue to be included in the story. We dramatised the scene and then developed this into a written dialogue.

We have had great fun learning all about common multiples by playing the common multiples game with our partner, we had to roll the dice to find two numbers and then workout the common multiple before crossing it off on our sheet. We then used this knowledge to help us to find factors.

Autumn 2, Week 4

This week we worked on our narrative writing and wrote our own stories based on the story structure of ‘The Tunnel’ by Athony Browne. We created our story mountains and developed this ideas into paragraphs building and developing our narratives. We used a variety of grammatical features to aid cohesion in our writing.

Autumn 2, Week 3

On Monday we took part in our remembrance assembly and wrote remembrance acrostic poems, using a variety of language features.

We also had a great time on our year 5 trip to the cinema in Bromley to see The Grinch.

We used what we saw in the film to write our own free verse poems about the Grinch.

Autumn 2, Week 2

In science this week we looked at the different stages of human development and created our own informative timeline to show the changes that occur as we age..

We had a fantastic time learning traditional Bollywood dance. We learnt the meanings of the different moves and connected them together to form a dance which we performed.

Autumn 2, Week 1

We had a great fun on Monday morning creating our clay tiles for the whole school Artsmark project. We were creating intricate carved designs as well as adding some 3D elements. Take a look at our photos

Autumn 1, Week 6

This week we have developed our rugby skills to begin to play mini games. We practised our passing without moving when we had the ball as well as intercepting the ball between our opponents.  By developing these skills we scored many tries.

We also had a fantastic time at the Science Museum learning all about space. Take a look at our photos to see how much we enjoyed our day.

Autumn 1, Week 5

English- This week we have been looking at newspaper opinion articles. We have been gathering our reasons why the hidden figures must be remembered. We then further developed these ideas by finding informative facts to back up our point or arguments. We are excited to write our opinion articles.

Maths- This week we have been working on multiplying and dividing decimal numbers by 10 and 100. We also compared decimal numbers with up to two decimal places.

We also wrote and performed our class assembly showcasing our learning so far this term.

Autumn 1, Week 4

English- This week we write diary entries as Mary Jackson, one of the 'Hidden Figures' as her talents were realised and she was given a job which ended segregation at NACA forever.

Maths- This week we have been working on column subtraction, involving exchanging. We solved a variety of problems and used our reasoning skills to identify errors in questions and explaining why an answer was correct or incorrect.

Topic- This week we learnt about where the Mayan Civilisation originated, we located the countries in central America using our map skills. We then created our own maps including a key.

Autumn 1, Week 3

English- We learnt how schools and workplaces used to be segregated during the time of NACA. We saw one of the 'Hidden Figures' go to court just to be allowed to study the course she wanted. We thought this was unfair so we wrote persuasive letter to the principal of the college to persuade him to end segregation and encourage others to do the same.

Maths- This week we have been working on column addition, involving exchanging. We solved a variety of problems and used our reasoning skills to identify errors in questions and explaining why an answer was correct or incorrect.

Topic- We continued to work on our presentations on the Mayan people and looked at important journeys people take during our RE work on pilgrimages.
