This week in Elm Class we have been very busy!
We have started a new book in English called 'Into the Forest'. We have explored the thoughts and feelings of the boy in the book during the first 3 key events in the story. We have acted out a conversation between the characters and have also acted out scenes in the book using our body language and different voice tones to show how there characters were feeling.
In Maths, we have started to look at numbers containing 2 decimal places, we have looked at ordering and rounding these numbers as well as placing them accurately onto number lines.
In Science, we planned and conducted an experiment to explore gravity and air resistance. In pairs, we made 2 different sized spinners and looked at how the size of the blades impacted how quickly they fell to the ground.
We have been researching our local area in Geography. We have been focusing on the human and physical features nearby - using Google Maps to help us - and we explained why these are so important to us.
We look forward to continuing our learning next week!
This week in year 5 we have been writing our letters of kindness to people important to us, we have thought of some compliments we can share and reminisced on memories with this special person. This links nicely to our story 'The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse'.
During our maths lessons, we have taken place value knowledge to the next level and have been looking at numbers up to 1 million! We have been adding and subtracting 6-digit numbers as well as rounding them to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 and 100,000.
During Science this week, we planned and conducted an experiment with friction. In order to make this a fair test, we discussed what our variables would be and recorded our results 3 times to ensure our data was accurate.
In Art, we learnt the skill of sketching, and we practised our new skill by sketching a detailed image of a house. These were fantastic!
We look forward to having another fantastic week next week too!
What a great first full week we have had in Elm Class!
The children have settled very well and have shown a great attitude to their learning. In English, we have started our class story — ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’, where we have been exploring feelings and kindness.
In Maths, we have worked on place value with 5-digit numbers. We started the week with adding and subtracting 1, 10, 100, 1000 and 10,000 to our 5-digit numbers before learning to place them on a number line.
In Science, we worked in groups of 3 to plan and conduct an air resistance experiment, where we made parachutes, with one variable being changed. We then predicted how the size/shape/length of string for each parachute would affect the amount of air resistance.
Continuing with our mindfulness and wellbeing theme in art, we each made our own beautifully decorated story sticks which represent our favourite stories.
We look forward to finding out what we will get up to in our lessons next week!
Autumn 1 - Week 1
What a fantastic first week back!
We have really enjoyed getting to know our new teachers and getting back into our school routine. Together we have written a class charter in order to maintain a safe, enjoyable and happy working and learning environment. We have also played lots of maths games to get our brains working and to recap some previous learning from Year 4.
The first week back at school can sometimes be a bit scary as we all have our own little worries and concerns. To help us settle into a new environment, we have made our own worry dolls. These have been really enjoyable to make, and we look forward to taking them home and using them when needed.
During our Science lesson this week, we had the opportunity to conduct 5 different experiments as an introduction to our new topic 'Forces'. We have learnt some new vocabulary (Gravity, Air Resistance, Buoyancy, Friction, Levers) which we aim to explore more during this half-term.
We have really enjoyed our first week back and cannot wait to see what fun things we will get up to next week!
