Week Beginning 11th October 2021
 

This week we have been learning about our senses and our story was 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?' by Eric Carle. The children did a wonderful job of acting out parts of this story and learning their individual lines, we were so impressed! We used our senses to learn about the seasonal changes of Autumn happening around us. It has been a fantastic first half term and we hope you all enjoy your two weeks off!

Week Beginning 4th October 2021
 

This week our stories were 'I love my Granny' and 'I love my Grandad' written by Giles Andreae. We talked a lot about our grandparents and our family history. We learnt about the past and present when discussing older members of our families and we talked about our family tree. Our phonics sounds were 'ck, e, u, r' and we have started to learn how to blend small words using the sounds we know. In maths we have been learning how to subitise with numbers up to 5 whilst ordering numerals and matching amounts. 

Week Beginning 27th September 2021
 

This week we read the Anthony Browne stories, 'My Mum' and 'My Dad.' We talked about and drew our parents and we tried to write the words mum and dad using our phonics sounds. We have now learnt the sounds 'g, o, c, k' and we are starting to write small words. In Maths we practised our counting and ordering of numbers to 10 and 20. 

Week Beginning 20th September 2021
 

This week our story was 'Five Minutes Peace.' We talked about and drew our family and the children sent in photos of their family to talk about. Our phonics sounds were 'i, n, m, d' and we have started to put the sounds together to make small words. In Maths we have been learning to order numbers and match amounts to numerals. 

Week Beginning 13th September 2021
 

This week we have started staying at school for full days. The children have done so well and settled in with ease. Our topic for this half term is 'Ourselves' and this week we have been learning about the story of 'Funny Bones.' The children have listened to and retold the story and they have learnt about parts of our body. We also made some wonderful Funny Bones artwork. In phonics we learnt the sounds s, a, t, p. 

Week Beginning 6th September 2021
 

This week we have started staying for lunch at school. The children have been getting used to choosing their own lunches each morning and they have done so well with eating in the canteen each day. We have been learning our new school routine and have enjoyed our first PE and music lessons this week! Our topic is 'Ourselves' and we have been learning about how we are all unique. 

Week Beginning 19th July 2021
 

For our last week in Reception we have enjoyed a walk to St Mary Cray train station using our maps that we drew. It was a lovely sunny day and a really nice way to finish our year together. We have had a class party this week and we enjoyed meeting our new teacher for year 1 and seeing our new classroom. Happy summer holidays everybody! Thank you for a fantastic year!

This week was Trains week in Reception. Our story was 'The Train Ride' and we drew our own map to our local train station, St Marys Cray. We look forward to using our maps to follow the route on our walk to the train station next week to look at the trains. We looked at past and present trains.

Week Beginning 5th July 2021
 

This week was aeroplanes week in Reception. Our story was 'Amazing Aeroplanes' and we enjoyed acting out a flight simulation with our friends and teachers. We learnt about the different parts of an aeroplane and also looked at different parts of the world. In Maths we have been adding and subtracting, practising how to record number sentences.

This week was Bikes week in Reception. Our story was 'Mrs Armitage on Wheels' and we enjoyed designing our own bikes and writing about our designs. We looked at bikes from the past and compared them to bikes now. We took part in our sports day on the field and did very well with all of the activities.

This week was Boats week in Reception. We were excited to have a Pirates themed week and loved our new Treasure Island role-play area! Our story of the week was 'Sunk' by Rob Biddulph and we followed his sketch of his 'Penguin Blue' character on his 'Draw with Rob' video. We have been practising for Sports Day this week.

This week was Buses week in Reception. We compared past and present buses and we also had a visit to our very own Poverest library bus, which was very exciting! Our story of the week was 'The Naughty Bus' and we have started to count in 5's and 10's in Maths. 

Week Beginning 7th June 2021
 

Welcome back to our last half term of Reception! Our new topic is Transport and this week we have been learning about Cars. Our story of the week was 'Mr Gumpy's Motor Car' and we looked at cars from the past and how they compare to new electric cars. The children enjoyed making this comparison. In Maths we have been consolidating our number skills by counting in 2's. 

Week Beginning 17th May 2021
 

This week we continued to watch our chicks grow and develop until the farmer from the Living Eggs company came to collect them again and take them back to his farm. They have grown much bigger now and they need more space. Our class tadpoles arrived this week and we have been learning about 'The Tadpole's Promise' story, teaching us about the frog lifecycle. 

Week Beginning 10th May 2021
 

This week we continued to watch our chicks grow and develop. On Monday we were able to start holding the chicks and every child had a go at holding or petting them. We used our sketch books to sketch the chicks and we learnt how to take care of them, making sure their heat lamp was always on to keep them warm. We also learnt all about the butterfly life cycle and have enjoyed watching our class caterpillars make their cocoons this week! 

Week Beginning 4th May 2021
 

This week was very exciting because Ben from the Living Eggs company delivered our live chicken eggs in the incubator. The eggs had already been incubated for around 19 days and so the chicks began to hatch on Wednesday and Thursday. By Thursday evening we had all ten healthy chicks. The children were lucky enough to watch one of the chicks hatch and they have spent the week making wonderful observations. This was an amazing way of learning all about the life cycle of a chicken.

This week our story was 'The Tiny Seed' by Eric Carle. We learnt all about the life cycle of a flower and this also linked with our learning of the different seasons. In Literacy we wrote sentences about seeds and seasons and in Maths we consolidated our learning of number bonds to 10. 

Week Beginning 19th April 2021
 

Welcome back to school! Our new topic for this half term is 'Growing.' This week our story was 'Jasper's Beanstalk' and we each planted our own broad bean. We learnt how to take care of our beans to help them grow. In Literacy we wrote about 'Jasper's Beanstalk' and in Maths we learnt to recall number bonds to 10 automatically.

This week our story was 'Chicken Licken' which was a nice link with learning about Easter. We enjoyed our Easter egg number hunt in the garden and our class Easter egg raffle. Well done to all our winners! We hope you all have a lovely Easter holiday and we look forward to learning about Growing when we come back to school. 

Week Beginning 22nd March 2021
 

This week our story was 'Cinderella.' We learnt to tell o'clock times on an analogue clock and some of us were able to tell 'half past' times. In Literacy, we wrote a list of jobs for Cinderella using our phonics skills. 

Week Beginning 15th March 2021
 

This week our story was 'The Gingerbread Man.' The children have enjoyed making their own gingerbread man puppets and writing captions about pictures from the story. In Maths we have been learning to recall number bonds to 10 everyday and have written out addition number sentences making 10. We were excited to use the headphones from the Now>Press>Play company to act out the story of 'The Gingerbread Man.' 

Week Beginning 8th March 2021
 

We were so happy to be back at school this week after a long lockdown. The children settled really well and were excited to be back with their friends everyday. Our story this week was Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children had a week of recapping all of their phonics sounds and number knowledge. We enjoyed some porridge at home for our homework this week with our favourite toppings. 

Week Beginning 1st March 2021
 

This week was English Week. Our story for English Week was 'The Last Wolf' by Mini Grey, which linked in nicely with our Traditional Tales topic. The children enjoyed making  masks of the characters and writing what they thought might happen next after they heard the first part of the story. In our live Maths sessions we learnt about doubles and how to write double addition number sentences.

Week Beginning 22nd February 2021
 

Welcome back from half term! We have now started a new topic of 'Traditional Tales.' Every week we will learn about a new Traditional Tale and practise retelling it using a story map. This week was all about 'The Three Little Pigs.' We learnt how to retell the story including the main events and we carried out a science experiment to see if our three houses that we built could blow away. In Maths we learnt about numerical patterns including odd and even numbers.

Week Beginning 8th February 2021
 

This week was Lollipop person week in Reception. We have learnt about the job of a Lollipop person and we got to have a recorded video call with our Lollipop man, David.  David told us all about his job and how he helps people. We also learnt all about road safety which is very important! In Maths we have been learning to continue and create our own repeating patterns. Our phonics sounds were oa, oo, oo and ar. This week it snowed a lot and we were about to explore the change of seasons and weather by playing in the snow!

Week Beginning 1st February 2021
 

This week was Dentist week in Reception. We have learnt about the job of a Dentist and we got to have a video from Roy Woodhoo,  who told us all about his job and how he helps people. In Maths we have been learning to recognise and name 3D shapes, and we went on a 3D shape hunt in our homes and gardens. Our phonics sounds were ng, ai, ee and igh.

Week Beginning 25th January 2021
 

This week was Police week in Reception. We have learnt about the job of a Police Officer and we got to have a video from PC Meaton,  who told us all about his job and how he helps people. In Maths we have been learning how to order the days of the week, and how to tell O'clock times on an analogue clock. The children did a great job of making their own clocks to practise on! Our phonics sounds were a recap of qu, ch, sh and th.

Week Beginning 18th January 2021
 

This week was Fire Fighter week in Reception. We have learnt about the job of a Fire Fighter and we got to have a video from Tai the fireman,  who told us all about his heroic job and how he helps people. In Maths we have been learning how to order daily events, our first step to telling the time. Our phonics sounds were qu, ch, sh and th.

This week was Doctors week in Reception. We have learnt about the job of a doctor and we got to have a video from Henry's mum who told us all about her amazing job and how she helps people. In Maths we have been learning about 2d shapes and we went on a shape hunt in our homes and gardens. Our phonics sounds were x, y, z and zz.

Happy New Year everybody! We are very disappointed to be back in Lockdown and we hope you are all keeping safe. Our new topic for this half term is 'People who Help Us.' We will be learning about a different occupation each week and this week is all about Vets.

Week Beginning 14th December 2020
 

This week was Christmas week! We were very sad to have had to close our Reception bubble early this week but very relieved that you all got to see our Nativity performance recording before we closed.

This week's home learning was all about Christmas. You did a fabulous job of keeping up with the home learning, well done! We wish you all a very happy Christmas! 

 

Week Beginning 7th December 2020
 

This week was Hanukkah and we were lucky enough to have Orran's mum talk to us on a zoom call to tell us all about how she celebrates Hanukkah at home with Orran. We enjoyed taking part in lots of Hannukah arts and crafts activities, including make our own Menorahs. 

In Maths we learnt about making repeating patterns with 2d shapes. 

Week Beginning 30th November 2020
 

This week was Thanksgiving week. We learnt why people celebrate Thanksgiving and we talked about what and who we are thankful for. In Maths we continued to practise subtraction and record our own subtraction number sentences. 

Our Christmas activities are well underway now and we have been rehearsing our nativity each afternoon. 

Week Beginning 23rd November 2020
 

This week we learnt about weddings around the World. We found out about the similarities and differences between Christian and Muslim weddings. At the end of the week we had our own Christian wedding, which was very exciting! 

In Maths we learnt how to subtract and record our own subtraction number sentences. 

Week Beginning 16th November 2020
 

This week we learnt about the Hindu festival of Diwali. We were lucky to have our midday supervisor, Mrs Singh come to visit us to tell us how she celebrates Diwali. We used clay to make Diwa lamps and we look forward to painting them when they dry. For Geography Awareness Week we have taken part in a traffic survey by completing a tally chart on which vehicles drove past our school field.

Week Beginning 9th November 2020 

This week we have been learning about Remembrance. The children joined in with the virtual 2 minutes silence along with the whole school on Wednesday. We were impressed with all the entries to our poppy competition! In Maths we have been adding and learning about the composition of number 8. 

Week Beginning 2nd November 2020 

Welcome back to school! Our new topic for this half term is 'Celebrations' and each week we will learn about a different celebration. This week we learnt about fireworks and Guy Fawkes. We Painted some beautiful fireworks paintings and used chalk on black paper to create firework art. In Maths we have been learning about adding and the composition of number 7. In phonics we are learning how to read CVC words by sounding out and blending. 

Autumn Term 1 

Our topic for this half term is 'Ourselves' where we all learn about each other and our families. The children have now settled really well into school life. They each have their own seat on the carpet and they have started using mini whiteboards for writing practise every morning when they learn a new phonics sound. The children are able to eat fruit and drink milk for their snacks throughout the day and they know their lunchtime routine well.
