Class News

Spring 2 - Week 1
 

This week we have been completing home learning via Google Classroom. In English, we have started a new text 'Shackleton's Journey'. We have written a job application, used cause and effect conjunctions in sentences for justifying our opinions on essential and non-essential items which the crew would take on their journey. We also wrote a letter from the view point of a crew member on the Endurance. In Maths, we have been dividing 2 and three digit numbers. In Music, we have been continuing on our journey with learning new musical skills with BYMT. In Spanish, we had a fantastic lesson with Mrs. Mezza. In Science, we have looked at the water cycle and made observations on how the water cycle works using ice, hot water, cling film, and bowls. We are continuing our book for reciprocal reading called The Ice Cream Villain on Serial Mash and for DT we are making our own board games with a Geography twist.

Spring 1 - Week 6
  

This week we have been completing home learning via Google Classroom. In English, we have finished our text 'Odd and The Frost Giants', where we did a retelling of the story and a book review. In Music, we have been continuing on our journey with learning new musical skills with BYMT. In Maths we have been multiplying using the grid method. In Spanish, we had a fantastic lesson with Mrs. Mezza. For the last two weeks, we have investigated evaporation and condensation in Science, by doing an experiment with water and jam jars and then presented our findings on google meet. In computing, we had a Safer Internet Day. We took a virtual tour around the Jorvik Centre for topic. In Art, we drew our own interpretation of Asgard as a cross-curricular link with our English text. We are continuing our book for reciprocal reading called The Ice Cream Villain on Serial Mash and for computing, we wrote a witness statement.

Spring 1 - Week 5
  

This week we have been completing home learning via Google Classroom. We had a Geography Day where we had cross-curricular links in English, where we wrote a leaflet on why children should visit Orpington High Street, thinking about the physical and man-made features. We created a tally chart and bar graph for Maths, using Google Maps to find the different shops in Orpington High Street. In English, we have continued with our text Odd and the Frost Giants, where we have researched rainbows and wrote instructions on how to create a rainbow bridge. In Maths, we have been multiplying and dividing by 10 with decimals. In Music, we have been continuing on our journey with learning new musical skills with BYMT. In Spanish, we had a fantastic lesson with Mrs. Mezza. In PSHE, we created our own online class charter. It has been Children's Mental Health Week so we have been doing a variety of lessons throughout the week with no screen day on Friday. It was a wonderful day with lots of creativity. Spring 1 - Week 4
  

This week we have been completing home learning via Google Classroom. In English, we have started a new text 'Odd and the Frost Giants', we have written a diary entry and a fact file about three Norse Gods. In Maths, we have been subtracting money and placing negative numbers and decimal numbers on a number line. In topic, we designed our own Viking God - top trump cards. In Music, we have been continuing on our journey with learning new musical skills with BYMT. In RE, we have been thinking about who is to blame for all the sin in the world and thinking about the story of Adam and Eve. We are continuing our book for reciprocal reading called The Ice Cream Villain on Serial Mash and for computing, we wrote a newspaper report. In Art, we have been selecting our own activities from Art packs, please see our class photo gallery for all our creativity. In Science, we have been doing investigations with water and the states of matter. In Spanish, we had a fantastic lesson with Mrs. Mezza.

Spring 1 - Week 3
  

This week we have been completing home learning via Google Classroom. In English, we have been writing our own stories on dragons. In Maths, we have been subtracting. We have been enjoying music with live lessons from the BYMT. In Art we have been selecting our own activities from Art packs, please see our class photo gallery for all our creativity. In Science, we have been learning about heating and cooling of different materials. In Spanish, we had a fantastic lesson with Mrs. Mezza. In topic, we have been locating relevant information and writing fact files on Viking longships. We have started a new book for reciprocal reading called The Ice Cream Villain on Serial Mash and for computing, we wrote our own ice-cream menu.

Spring 1 - Week 2
 

This week we have been completing home learning via Google Classroom. In English, we have been describing the appearance of our dragons and writing sentences with a grammar focus of expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials. In Maths, we have been adding. In Science, we have been learning about different gases and investigated this through using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. In Spanish, we had a fantastic lesson with Mrs. Mezza. In topic, we have been learning why the Viking invasion was so successful and created a storyboard. We have been enjoying music with live lessons from the BYMT. In Art we have been selecting our own activities from Art packs, please see our class photo gallery for all our creativity.

Spring 1 - Week 1
 

This week we have been completing home learning via Google Classroom. In English we have started a new topic on dragons, writing instructions, describing the appearance of dragons, and creating our own dragons as part of our Art focus. In Maths we have been learning about 3D shapes and Venn diagrams. In Spanish, we had a fantastic lesson with Mrs. Mezza. In RE, we have been learning about the different viewpoints on how the world was created through the viewpoints of science and religion. In topic, we have started learning about the Vikings and we created a timeline. In Science, we have started our topic States of Matter, looking at the properties of the three states.

December- 11th December
 

In Maths we have been multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals by 10, 100,1000. In English, we wrote our own explanations. We finished off our weavings for Art and Design. For Science we did an investigation using ice and cling film, looking at how greenhouse gases affect our temperatures. 

 

30th November-4th December
 

In Maths this week we have been learning about division using the bus stop method. In English we have started a new core text 'Until I Met Dudley', this is an explanation text on how everyday items work in the home. We have written a letter to Dudley asking for him to explain how a vacuum cleaner works. In Geography we have built Anglo-Saxon dwellings out of sticks and leaves and then tested them to see if they would still stand if a river flooded the terrain. (We used a watering can). In RE we have been learning about the importance of the Guru Granth Sahib for Sikhs and then we wrote about an item that is special to us. Finally, we designed Christmas cards for a competition that the School Council has set up for the whole school.

23rd November- 27th November
 

This week in Maths we have been multiplying using the grid method. In English, we have written an explanation on The Life Cycle of a Plant, to the Varmints. In Art and Design, we have continued with our weaving as part of our 'Anglo-Saxons' topic. In Geography we have been considering what might Anglo-Saxons transport up and down the river and what makes an area a good place to settle? In Science, we have been identifying and explaining the impacts of climate change and how the government could support this. In RE we have been identifying the features of a Gurdwara in Sikhism. In PSHE we have been discussing how people can judge our appearance. We looked at the artist Jeanette Sirois and used her images as a starting point. We then wrote about all the things we would like the world to know about us on photographs of ourselves. 

16th November-20th November
 

We have had a busy week in Fig class. It has been Geography awareness week where we have been studying maps to see where groups settled in the British Isles and then we were estate agents, writing why an Anglo -Saxon abode would be a great place to live. In English, we have continued with our text 'Varmints' and have written a retelling of the story in the first person. In Maths we have been adding and subtracting. In RE we have been storyboarding Guru Nanak's life in Sikhism. In Art and Design, we have continued weaving as part of the topic 'Anglo-Saxons'. Finally, in Science, we have been looking at the location of Jubilee Park in Pettswood and discussing the positives and negatives of having an adventure playground built in a wildlife conservation area.

 

9th November-13th November 

In English, we have begun to look at our core text Varmints a story about nurturing and new beginnings. In Maths, we have been learning about analysing data through bar charts, pictograms, and line graphs. In Art and Design, we have begun to weave using different yarns. In Geography we have been continuing with our map work and looking at where the Anglo-Saxons settled in the British Isles. In Science, we have been learning about branching databases. We also celebrated Remembrance Day on Wednesday. Check out our beautiful poppies in our class photos.

Autumn 2 

2nd November- 6th November 

Welcome back! We hope you all had a restful half term. 

This term we are continuing with Anglo-Saxons. In English, we have been looking at WW1 poetry and writing about a 'Lone Soldier' using a photograph as a starting point. In Maths, we have learned about time and reading timetables. In Science, we have been learning about 'Animals and Their Habitats'. In Geography, we have been studying maps of Europe and how different groups traveled across to the British Isles. In Art and Design, we have begun our journey on weaving as part of our Anglo-Saxon topic.  In Music, lessons have moved virtually but that has not stopped us from continuing on our journey with learning new musical skills! 

 

19th October- 23rd October

This week in English we have written a fact file for a chosen person as part of Black History Month. In Maths we have been learning about 'Time'. In Art and Design, we have created portraits and mounted them on our paper weaving. In RE we have begun to learn about Sikhism. For music this week we learned different rhythms using sticks. We cannot believe it is half term next week!

12th October- 16th October

Fig has been learning how to use the grid method for multiplication in Maths. In English, we have been writing newspaper reports for our text 'Tuesday'. In Science, we did a demonstration on how the digestive system works. In RE, we have learned about the word 'Sacred' and how the Bible is sacred to Christians. We have been learning about Black History Month and doing research around a chosen person in computing. For Art and Design, we have been learning weaving. 

 

5th October- 9th October
 

In Maths this week we have been continuing with different operations. In English, we have been learning about the features of newspapers as well as looking at direct and indirect speech, fact and opinion. All ready for writing a newspaper report for our text Tuesday next week. In RE we have been writing our own ten commandments. In topic, we have been discussing the feelings of Anglo-Saxons invading Britain and how the British felt being invaded by the Anglo-Saxons. We have learned about the different parts and functions of the digestive system in Science. Finally, in Art and Design, we have written our names in Runes using the milk pastel technique.

 

28th September -2nd October
 

In Maths this week we have been doubling and halving. Also, we have been looking at patterns in different times tables. In English, we have written a police report for our text 'Tuesday'. In topic, we are continuing with Anglo-Saxons and as a cross-curricular theme, we are writing our names in Runes ready for creating a runic piece in milk pastel art.

 

21st-25th September 

This week in Fig we have started a new text 'Tuesday'. We are being detectives and finding out what happened in a small village where strange occurrences have happened. In Maths we are adding and subtracting. In Art and Design, we have painted our own endangered animal using watercolours. In Science, we have been writing a conclusion for our investigation and seeing whether our predictions were correct. 

 

14th-18th September 

A busy week for Fig this week, we have continued with Place Value in Maths delving a little deeper with our understanding. In English, we have been reading more acrostic poems in 'Lost Words' and wrote our own acrostic poem. In Science, we set up our own investigation to see which liquid would discolour eggshells. We started music this week and will be learning Ukulele, in PE we have been playing different games.

7th- 11th September

In English, we have started the text 'Lost Words'. We adopted a bird and wrote a 'Yoruba Poem'. In Maths we have been learning about Place Value. In Science, we have started our topic 'Animals Including Humans' and made our own teeth in playdough. Check out the Fig photo gallery to view our creations. In topic, we have started our topic 'Anglo-Saxons' and created a title page. For RE we are studying Christianity and in Art and Design we have learning to paint with watercolours linked to our text 'Lost Words'.

We have been extremely excited to welcome everyone back to school. This week we spent time catching up with each other and settling into Year 4.
