Week 5 - 27th September to 1st October
In English we have continued to look at the book Into the Forest by Anthony Browne. We used the conscious alley drama technique to give the main character advice on which route to take. We have also been using our story maps to help us write a recount of the events in the story. In Maths we have been learning to add and subtract decimals numbers and using our mathematical knowledge to explain our answers. In Art we have produced some wonderful monoprints, using our sketches and drawing from earlier sessions.
Week 4 - 20th to 24th September
This week we have started a new book in English called 'Into the Forest'. We have explored the thoughts and feelings of the boy in the book during the first 3 key events in the story. We have acted out a conversation between the characters and have also acted out scenes in the book using our body language and different voice tones to show how there characters were feeling.
In Maths, we have started to look at numbers containing 2 decimal places, we have looked at ordering and rounding these numbers as well as placing them accurately onto number lines.
In Science, we planned and conducted an experiment to explore gravity and air resistance. In pairs, we made 2 different sized spinners and looked at how the size of the blades impacted how quickly they fell to the ground.
We have been researching our local area in Geography. We have been focusing on the human and physical features nearby - using Google Maps to help us - and we explained why these are so important to us.
We look forward to continuing our learning next week!
Week 3 - 13th to 17th September
In English we have explored the features of an informal letter and have used these to help us plan and begin to draft our letters of kindness. In Maths we have continued with our topic of Place Value by taking a closer look at comparing, adding & subtracting and rounding 6 digit numbers. During Topic we further developed our geography skills by using compasses and practised this skill with our Treasure Maps. This half term we are looking at Architecture in Art and have begun this topic with a wonderful session on observational drawing of houses, please see photos of our amazing sketches. In Science we continue our Forces topic and this week have been investigating friction and the effect that different surfaces have.
Week 2 - 6th to 10th September
This week has been full of fun activities for Elder Class. We have begun to look at our core text "The Boy, the mole, the fox and the horse by Charlie Mackesy, where we have discussed the importance of kindness and the impact it has on others. In Maths we have explored the place value of 5 digit numbers.
As part of our Geography session the children really enjoyed practising using their 4 & 6 digit grid reference knowledge with games of Battleships, and we began to investigate the effect of air resistance during Science with our Parachute experiment.
First Week as Elder Class
What an incredible first few days we have had! It has been an absolute pleasure to get to know the children of Elder Class.
In English we have discussed our Rights and Responsibilities as class members, what learning environment works best for us and have agreed our class charter.
In Maths we have had lots of wonderful hands-on activities to help us explore Place Value, Addition & Subtraction and Multiplication & Division. The children have really enjoyed these activities and we're looking forward to including more of these this year.
We have also begun our journey of developing a growth mindset.
Please take a look at our Class Dojo Posts and Class Photos to see what else we have been up to this week.
