School Life

School Council

At Poverest we believe it is important for all pupils to have a voice and their opinions to be heard.  Through our School Council we encourage the children to respect other people.

We teach the children to have respect for democracy and have an understanding of the democratic processes. Because of this, the children of Poverest understand how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process. At the start of each academic year, each class elects a new School Councillor to represent the children; this is in both KS1 and KS2.

As a School Council we see ourselves as the voice of all pupils in the school. Our links with staff, parents, pupils, the governors and community enable us to participate in decisions about fundraising and the success of our school.

The children are encouraged to take action within our local and wider community by taking on projects to make changes for the better. We have taken part in 1  project so far this year: collecting advent calendars and selection boxes for Brighter Begiinnings to give to families in the area who are struggling financially.

Meetings are held every half-term. This gives School Councillors an opportunity to speak to their respective classes and get some feedback to share at the meeting. During the meeting, all Councillors have the opportunity to speak and share ideas and will discuss action points to be completed before the next meeting.
